car is whinning... HELP?
My 89 RS started whinning yesterday. The sound is coming from the back of the car, At first I thought it was a piece of plastic rubbing on the tires but when I looked there was nothing. I had a guy flash me and point to the back of the car but I don't know what he was reffering to.
My next thought was the rear end, I thought the differential sprung a leak and had no fluid and that was why it was whining, so I took it to the shop and popped the differential cover off (wow that oil stunk) and changed the fluid. There was quite a bit of fluid in there so I thought it might have been lo. I put it all back together, filled it up and test drove it, and it is still whinning.
What can this be?? a bad rear end??
Thanks
John

What did you see when you took the cover off? Were there metal chunks? Did you do a wear pattern to see if it is sitting abnormally?
Try this. Take your Driveshaft out and check it. The U-joints should turn from one end to the other smoothly. No nochiness is acceptable. Next you need to have the DS balanced and see if that cures the problem.
