Question Car runs bad, need help asap

Car Info: 1989 Iroc Z, 5.7 TPI, 86,000 miles.

Background: Ok, so while helping to cure my need to understand how things work, I practically took my entire MAF apart. Took the screws out, pried around inside, etc etc.

Symptoms: The car idles low (600 rpms), surges (600-1800 rpms) sometimes, and will even die. This all while just trying to idle!

Symptoms: While driving, sometimes it'll act like it's dying, power drops, the 'Egine is dying' light comes on, and just plain bad stuff that makes me question it's ability to get me home!

Question: Does this sound like the MAF is dying? If so, should I get another stock one, or is there good upgraded model to get? Thanks for your help!

Dude you killed your MAF it sounds like to me. Those things are pretty sensitive....(but for some reason I was thinking in 88 or 89 they went to speed density??? If it is the MAF you need a new one.

Happened to me one time when I forgot to plug my MAF back in. If thats not the case, sounds like you need to get a new one. And NO its not worth it to get an upgraded one. Get a factory replacement. Upgraded ones don't really do anything for you as far as I have ever heard.... well besides lighten your wallet more.

Is it possible to switch my car over to Speed Density fairly cheaply? Or just go for another MAF? I have no clue what code it's throwing, it's parked, 'cause of winter weather, at my moms place so I only see/drive it a couple times a month.
