I've got an 88 IROC, and i'm just trying to see what i can do with it. I've got access to the tools and some limited help to build an engine, i'm just trying to get a feel for what i'm going to need. 500 hp was just a number i pulled out of the sky to get some conversation going....

Ok 500hp wasn't a bad number to pull out of the sky. If you take it as 500 FLYWHEEL horsepower, it can definitely be done. Here is a link to a fairly affordable 520hp 350 build with all off the shelf parts:

500 flywheel = about 425 RWHP.

Some of us are pretty close to that. Perhaps the answer is to shoot for 350 RWHP, then "kick it" with a nitrous boost when you need that extra 75 HP. That might be within the realm of a TPI.

sounds like a good plan, I've got some money that i've saved up for a motor, about 5K that i would be willin to drop into it. I can have access to the shop after hours and the manager will help like once a week, so i'm hoping to save the labor, and put that into higher quality parts. Plus i can learn

AFR's new 23-degree cylinder heads that are coming out this winter sound like the perfect foundation upon which to build your engine. Pick out your cubic inch displacement, pick your target compression ratio, your pistons, and then pick your combustion chamber size that you want.

They're already out. Check their site, their new heads are as much as 20cfm better across the board.
