spray the nitrous at it, is the easy way, but this probably wouldnt work on a stock setup for more than one pass.... lol doubling the hp with the juice is probably one of the worst ideas man kind has ever had

otherwise you're looking at a set of large port alluminum heads, some sort of single plane high rise intake, big big cam, biggest longest headers you cn fit and dont bother with the mufflers, domed pistons to match the heads...

and of course you'll need to beef up the bottom, and transmission, as well

With the TPI intake, never. If you're looking to make 500rwhp from the L98 as a foundation, you'll need to change EVERYTHING that classifies it as an L98, other than the block. You would need aftermarket heads, cam and valvetrain, rotating assembly, a very good exhaust and most definately the intake. You'll need an alternative port intake. It would need to be a fairly radical 350, with a MiniRam, SuperRam, or a single plane carb style intake converted to port fuel injection.

84firebird - nitrous works fine, safely, even on a stock longblock when tuned properly. My old 91 Z28 had just minor bolt-ons, and a 175 wet shot and went 12 flat for 2 years before it was wrecked.

Just say No! You can get just under 400 I'd say. I've seen tests in the past where magazines got that. But it was ten years ago. Maybe a yahoo search might still bring it up.

I trapped 124mph in a fairly heavy 89 iroc with a untouched l98 longblock with a stealth ram and twin turbos. Engine had 10,000 miles of hard boost when I pulled it and it was still working fine. Either nitrous or turbo should work.

if you changed the block at all, would that help, or is the tpi just not gunna get enough fuel there? I'm building off an '88 IROC and planning to pop in a t-56. It has the 305, but my plans were to clean it up nice, steal the tpi off it and set it in the back of a shed we got along with the origional trans, just in case i ever wanted to sell it. I still wanted the car to look "stock" under the hood, i know you can hide a nitrious setup in there, so i'll probably shoot for that, but with the right cam, heads, exhaust, etc, what is the best the tpi can do for rwhp?

You're not going to do it without some kind of power adder. The heads and induction can't make that kind of power in a NA engine.

Nope, ya canna do it cap'n !
Not without some more dilithium crystals in your pocket!
You'll need to spend them crystals on new heads, cam, intake, and nitrous!

Agree, 400rwhp out of a 350ci, N/A appears to be about the limit using L98 aluminum heads.
Super Chevy, this month, has an article doing a 383 with modded L98 heads and intake. They claim 485hp, I believe this is flywheel hp, take a look.

The question really is why? If your starting from scratch why restrict yourself. When I did my 87 Vette, I thought I was saving money. I wasn't. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't!! Where are lots of ways to get 500hp out of a small block. Why make it any harder or more expensive then necessary??

you can make a 350 crank out a lot of ponies, but you will not fit the intake under the hood, and you will replace the crank, rods, and pistons, none of which will make it at 500hp (a 383 crank would be a nice help since your stock one won't make it anyway), you'll have a monster cam w/ about 250* duration @ .050", you'll have a set of about 200cc intake ports on a set of very costly heads, and your intake will be like a performer rpm airgap a victor or an xcellerator

this is a nice kit ;-) cheapest way i can find

The only way I could MAYBE see you getting there is with almost nothing left stock and a good amount of boost.

I guess i like the TPI set-up on top, just for show when i pop the hood. Origionally i was going to forget the tpi, but it would be nice to keet it "stock" looking for show(therefor why i asked, without turbos)....i wanted 500 horses just as a nice number, but i guess i can settle for 400 and nitrious. I want something that has some noticable power, but not a full out drag car or something. I'm wanting to put in 4:11s, a T-56 and my dream engine.... What kind of intake is recomended? Am i forgetting something.......?
