Cam swap results

the cam swap is complete, 3 days and 16 man hours later my iroc was ready...

first start was rough idle, stalled out, about 10 degrees retarded....set that straight, idles in park at about 1000-750rpms, idles in drive about 600rpm...which it did with the old cam

runs SMOOTH.....the sound isn't major, but i can definately hear a throatier idle....runs great

i probably will get a new stall converter as sitting bull told me i would...the low end torque is a little soggy, from a dead stop it wasn't spinning like it did in the old car, it stilled pulled decent, my 60ft times will probably slip a little, but my friend is confident with a new converter and some ignition work i can get some of my low end torque back....the car definately has some timing to be done, next time we go to the track we'll bring the tools and figure out the best config for torque and good idling, no knocking or pinging tho, very smooth

pulls hard until 6k RPM, and still feels like it could go more, DEFINATELY gained a significant amount of horsepower......track will tell just how much i lost on the low end.....but she pulls hard now in the mid-high RPM ranges....just sharing in case anyone else was thinking of doing a cam swap in a 305 TPI....i used a 94' vette LT1 cam, 460lift

The LT1 cam is great for budget 305s. I enjoy mine too, although it sits under tbi.

Mine is also with the tbi but it was definately the best mod I did besides gears. I lost a little low end at first but with the timing and fuel pressure adjusted, I got most of it back and the upper RPM's climb so much faster now.
If you get a stall let us know how it turns out with the cam b/c I'm thinking of this too.
Chuck!, what have you done to your RS??

Too much for the times Im running heh.

Vortec heads, Performer RPM intake, LT1 cam, B&M 2400 stall, Hooker Headers, catco cat, Flowmaster catback. Once I get some gears and posi I'll hopefully start seeing the times I want out of my setup.

What else is done besides your cam and what gears are you runnin?

everything else on the car is stock, one of my buddies went under the rear of the car and couldn't find the axel code, im just assuming i have 3.23 or 3.43s.....

right now im gonna buy a 350 ( or "santa" will get me one), either bare of with a very minimal bottom end and build it up....then ill simply take my TPI intake and put that on the 350...anyone know the stock cc of my 305 heads? cause ill need to use my year heads (something about the intake not lining up on other heads) and i need to know if ill need to buy better heads or if i just port/polish my stock heads that they'll be suffienct to move over onto the 350 with my intake.....heads are expensive so i would like to avoid buying new one if possible unless the stock ones are that bad

They are 58 cc and they'll work perfectly on a 350 once you've ported, polished and bowl blended them, and enlarged the intake out to 1.94". They'll even work great on a 400.

Chuck!, what are you running?

I had to rebuild my 305 last week, I wanted a 350 but time, money, and emissions wouldn't allow that for me lol
I have the LT1 cam, 3.73 posi, magnaflow catback, homemade dual snorkel, 30 over, heads off an 88 iroc, and i bumped the compression up slightly to 9.5.1
Hopefully within the next week or two I will have a custom chip.
I gotta goto the track next spring, I'm hoping for a 14.5-14.8 if I'm lucky and if I shift the auto myself.

Also, how much of a difference did the hooker headers make for ya cause this will be my next mod.

Well thus far my best run is 15.500 @ 92.81 2.412 60'. Traction sucked *** as you can see, still running nonposi 2.73s. Stock chip and stock tbi also didnt help and there were a slew of other problems but no one wants to hear me bitch lol. I would have liked to run her once more as she sits, but Im away at school and mother nature didnt agree with that the two times I went home.

The Hookers are pretty nice, esp for the money. I got them when they were 10% of at summit so I ended up paying like $318 which wasnt bad at all. The only thing I recommend is to dremmel out the ball collector where it hits the y pipe. Mine only measured about 1.9" across, I opened it up to 2.25".

Next year its a blitz to 13s n/a though. They'll come.

With the headers, cam, and gears I would be supprised if you were running a little quiker than 14.5. Its all about the launch though!
