Cable driven speedo w/ t-56

Ok guys, I've seen all the posts about how to correct an electronic speedometer, but I have seen very few posts on how to correct the speedometer with a cable driven one. Lets hear your answers. I am planning on dooing the swap during spring break so I want to get all the parts together before I swap.
Thanks
Chris

I've got a mechanical/cable driven speedometer and a T56. What you do is you get something that converts the cable driven speedo to a language, so-to-speak, that the electronic transmission can understand.

www.abbott-tach.com - Go to their "Cable-X" box and purchase that. That converts the signal so your speedo will work.

I have one.

Huh.... a cable driven speedo could not be run off an electric setup without either an electric motor driving the cable (very inefficant) or a new plug that mechanically turns the cable for your speedo... as of yet I haven't seen any but there must be something out there

go to the web page in my sig and on the left go to tech database. There it explains in detail what you have to do to convert the 6 speed and an lt1

stonedchihuahua: If you look close to the picture you would see that it takes the VSS signal and converts it through an electric motor. It has the plug on the side of the box were you would plug in the cable drive. The picture even has the cable in it.

I wouldn't be so cocky about something you're not even sure about. Do your research first!

honesty couldn't find it and I wasn't being cocky you just made it sound like you could hook the thing straight into it... I do wanna know where you got it from

BTW... You can also do a tail house conversion. JTR makes the conversion easy. Its a little more costly than the conversion box but I would think its a little more reliable.

It does plug straight in.

I haven't inatlled one myself but from that picture I see three wires. I assume one is a constant power to feed the motor, one is a ground, and the third is the signal wire. The ground and signal wire splice into the VSS port on the Tailhousing of the T56.

Then you just need to mount the box and plug in the speedo cable.

It can't get any easier than that!!

Thats just what I think. I'm not 100% sure how it works but thats my assumption.

LT1Powered85Z: You've installed yours. How is it done?

it's a cable X the signal runs into the box were an electric motor gets the signal and turns it into mechanical ( turns the speedo cable) theres a power ground and a signal, it's pretty simple. Other than that I have nothing to say.

That's exactly how it works. 3 inputs: power, ground, VSS. One output: speedo cable. I'm not sure about calibrating it for gears/tires but thats what it says on their website. I expect the VSS input has to be calibrated for the right pulse rate. You can mount it behind the dash and run a wire from the VSS and only have to route a couple feet of speedo cable, or mount it in the trans tunnel and use your original cable.

there are like ten switches to calibrate for tires gear and all that. The book it comes with helps you figure it all out.

They no longer make it.

irocz383: You're exactly right, that's how it works. And as Xtremeblue43 said, there are switches on it that allows you to set it up for what you've got...so it's accurate.
