a/c blows cold mist

My a/c system blows cold. But sometimes blows cold mist. Looks kinda cool though, but car starts to smell afterwards.

I don't think the evap. hose is clogged, since there's a puddle of water under the car.

Any suggestions?

Your evaporator core is partially freezing up. Your low pressure cycling switch is not working correctly or you have your A/C settings on MAX a/c and lowest blower speed setting and your driving in hot/humid weather when this occurs. Nothing serious will happen if you don't do anything about it but eventually your evap core will fully freeze up and then you'll lose your cold air until the ice melts (5 min) off the core..

Not exactly. R-12 and R-134a are totally different refrigerants....R-12 is bad for the ozone and much more expensive (due to EPA regulations,) and is what most cars came equipped with until 8-10 years ago. It is very easy to change from R-12 to R-134a, and it costs about the same amount of $ as you would spend refilling it with R-12. Most shops (ours included) won't even service an R-12 system, except to convert it to R-134a. DO NOT MIX TYPES OF REFRIGERANT this will destroy your A/C compressor and cost a lot of money to repair.

If it smells like antifreeze you could have a leaking heater core and the leak is freezing up,do you loose coolant over time? I would check the drain hose anyway it might be partialy cloged.

I had the r12 to r134a conv. done when the dryer was replaced, cost $250.

The air coming out of the vents doesn't smell, just when the mist settles down on the fabric.

I also keep my a/c setting at max cool, and my fan at lowest speed. My a/c is ice cold...burrrrh. I'll check my evaporator core and also have the expansion valve checked.

The weather is hot but not humid. So humidity is not the problem...hopefully.

Thanks for the responses. I'll test these theories and keep you guys posted.

Thanks again.

Try setting the air temp a little warmer, that might help to keep it from freezing up. After the cabin becomes cool you can set the AC to normal also,as on max it just keeps recycleing the air inside the car.
