My buddy brought a 1988 GTA with a 305 TPI (?) 5L.

It is in pretty good condition, but the service engine light comes on and then goes out... the past owner just had the car serviced at the dealer and they changed a bunch of stuff and he paid like 400USD for the repairs.

How fast are these cars stock? What are the best mods to do to them first? What are some good sites that sell 3rd gen apperance and performance mods?

I am a 4th gen guy so I do not know too much about 3rd gens.

my foot did not lift off the floor from launch to lights
if hes not afraid to break it itll run pretty quick...

im smoked quite a few LT1 cars

the only mods i have one to my car
flowmaster muffler
k&n
and some plenum porting..

first things id do would be headers
exhuast
then work on the intake...
have the egr walls just inside the plenum ground down

 

Sounds like an EGR problem, does it happen mostly when cruising not while accelerating??

 

the guy who owns it is telling us its the O2 sensor, and he is giving us a brand new O2 sensor
