black charcoal canister
its a black coffee can looking thing w/ about 4 lines going to it. it has charcoal in it (hense the name "charcoal canister") and it holds fuel vapors from the fuel tank. there is a purge valve in the line that goes to the throttle body that only allows the vapors to be sucked in at a certain RPM,such as cruising down the highway.
One line from the tank (vent line) one line to the throttlebody (purge outlet) and one line from a solenoid operated vacuum control valve.
Basically, the can collects the excess fuel vapor when the tank becomes pressurized and when the computer opens the vac valve, it releases these vapors into the intake tract to be burned.
It's more-or-less just to keep gas fumes from venting out into the open air. It's not something that will hurt performance, but from a racer's point of view it's dead weight. I scrapped mine when I converted to carb.
