Bigger tb then a 58mm

My dad went to the Nationals (dont know the sponser) at route 66 drag way in Joliet, Il today and he was talking to Hollie about our 386 stroker motor and the little problems we are having with it. Well the Hollie guy is beating it in my dads head that we need more air moving into the engine even though we have a hollie 58mm tb, the guy said that they make bigger tb's then 58mm. Well i didnt want to look like an *** and cause an argument so i cept my mouth shut and waited till my dad left to tell him that they dont make a bigger tb then a 58mm for the mini ram intake. (i know they do for cobras and stuff but not camaros) All our car needs is better heads and we will be fine. My dad dosent seem to understand that, and he is convinced that we need a bigger tb not heads. So, i need to know before i get into an even bigger braw with my dad about this tb crap, is there a tb bigger then 58mm with a single or a duel butterfly? I think they make a big *** single butterfly for the fbodys but i dont know what size or who makes it, does anyone know what im talking about? Thanks

Ask you dad this: Can he use more than 1000 cfm of air? If so, get a supercharger. I suspect that he will not be able to make it work. Even if he has a 2000 cfm TB, it is useless unless the manifold and heads can flow that much. Even if they can, will the engine need it? I suspect it will cut down velocity if you have too large of a TB.

Maybe the guy was thinking you had a single T/B but ours is twice that as 48mmx2 stock. A 58mmx2 should support roughly 650 or so Hp natural and 100 or so more blown.

What's the problem with your dad's car?
Most people that create strokers forget that they need a LOT more agressive cam with a tighter lobe seperation like 110* and more duration like 230/240*@.050". What seems BIG in a 350 will work good in a 383+ stroker.
Heads, where the power is made, will definitely need replaced. A good priced/flowing head is the World Products S/R Torquer "350" series. 67cc/2.02/1.50 or bigger runnered Sportsman II's.
The Vortech's way taller intake ports won't be covered by the stock TPI intake manifold causing a massive vacuum leak! You'll need the Scoggin-Dickey piece or weld a lot of material to the top and bottom of the stock intake base openings.
Before I'd spend $1200 on TPI parts, I'd buy an intake with a 4 barrel T/B multiport set up such as the Edelbrock, or Holley system uses.

90rocz: look at the sig, i already have spent $1200 in tpi parts for this car, ive spent alot more then that and there is no way in hell im going to go to carb after going through with all this stuff. Im going with a zzx or zz9 cam with afr 195's or 210cc heads. Plus we are going to bore it out to a 388 stroker. We have been having some problems with burning oil and starting is hard. We have already replaced the rings twice and the first 100 miles the car is great and fast as hell but after that it starts to burn oil and start ruff. Anyways, we (my dad and i) are just going to spend alittle bit more money and go bigger. My dad just seems to think we arent getting enough air. I already convinsed him that we are, so thanks for help guys.

I know someone with a 60mm tb on a superram. I think it was custom made though.

TPIS makes a "monoblade" that flows ~1000cfm+.

Accel makes a twin 58 that flows 1000.

The thing is, that it's not the diameter of the tubing or the t/b that becomes a restriction to "serious" HP with the TPI set up it's the "LONG" runner length of like 19 inches!
And I NEVER said to convert to a "carb", I said a 4-hole throttle body mounted on a modifed 4-bbl intake with 8 fuel injectors, like the ones sold by Edelbrock and Holley. More area plus short runners....PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
Check your ring side clearance on the pistons too tight can be a big problem, a new school of thought on this one is to also allow more ringside clearance and end gap to allow compressed gasses to get behind the ring planting it harder against the cylinder wall. Oil will definitely kill power by means of detenation retard.

PS; I would've kept the MAF set up, it calibrates much better, but used a LARGE Granitelli Motorsports MAF sensor and adaptor/doubler from Ram Charger(old MODERN MUSCLE CAR) that effectively doubles the range of you MAF sensor allowing over 500grams/sec metering. But that's just me........
And, I like the heads you already have, I'd spend more time on the cam choice, TPIS's aren't the best out there by far....

I have already switched to speed density so im not going back to maf now, plus the only aftermarket maf they make is that wells one you have to modify. The lt1 im going to stay with maf because they do make an aftermarket maf, so i will do that. I dont have the long tube runners anymore, i have the mini ram. The edelbrock heads sucks, i have stage 2 porting on them with big valves and they dont flow enough air for my engine to make any power, the highist # this engine put up was 347hp with 447lbs torque to the wheels. I want/need over 400rwhp and 460 lbs. The cam i have might give me the power but i need a better one its 224 230 at .50 and 535 544 with 1.6rr. I need heads and a cam. I think that is what im going to need for what i want, ill post the #'s when i get them too. But anyways, thanks for the input and ill ceep everything in mind.

I really feel you man, it is sooo hard to convince your old man of something, especially when it is new school stuff. You with out a doubt, have nailed the problem on the head, with the heads being the problem. It is impossible for even a 52 mm throttle body to not support the $hitty edelbrock heads, even fully ported. Those things in my opinion will never flow more than 420 horse. They are just plain garbage! I will be running an engine this year that will be right at 800 flywheel with a 52 mm. I know stocker throttle bodies pulling better numbers than yours. Bigger than 58 mm is pure crazyness.

You do not need a bigger throttle body. I have done a tone of research on it and with a 386 (388) you do not need more. I would go and get some AFR 210's and that will prove that you do not need a larger TB.

I don't know about twin 48 mm but I do know that most twin 58mm flow between 1000 & 1100 CFM The only TB that I have seen that flows more than that is the Arizona Speed and Marine 1300CFM MonoBlade TB That is the Largest TB that I have seen and or heard of. But I have heard that the blades bend under supercharged condtions.. But a 1300 CFM monoblade isnt going to help any if your intake is restricted, or if your heads are restircited your just running into a brick wall. If he really thinks he needs a larger TB get a 1300 CFM monoblade and take it and the intake and the heads somewhere and have them machined to be flow matched. That little trick alone is sometimes good for another 75hp, let alone better responsiveness and many other goodies..
