Big Block

Got the motor in trany bolted up. I got to put the headers On and they wont fit. I got Hooker Super Comps. I think the Motor has to be jacked up outa the motor mounts and the headers bolted on. Then bolt the motor in the mounts... Any one else out there with a Big block in a 3rd gen

Hooker Supercomp headers are not a direct bolt in. I use a deep sump oil pan. The only way I could get the passenger side in was to lift the engine up as high as I could and even then it was a lot of work.

It's easier to put the headers in first then drop the engine in. I can have the engine out and sitting on a stand on 90 minutes. It took me 7 hours to put the headers in the first time.

BIG BLOCK HEADERS

Heh, I did the same thing bout four years ago. I had to mod the frame on the driver side to get clearence. there is a trick to putting them in; The passenger side must go in first with motor jacked up off frame mount, then install slip pipe for cyl. #2 leave unbolted then jack up the driver side of the engine and install left header. I think i remove my steering shaft to do this.the flange should pass over the filter boss on the driver side as it goes in.

Please e mail me at 8t5z at sbcglobal.net for more info.

take a look at this it has something you might be interest in.

exaushted

You may not have to mod the frame if you run a stock like head, I`ve got the merlin 310`s they raise the exausht ports .750 I think. The frame mod I had to do was cut about an inch out of the frame where the header passes under it(boxed it in with 18 gauge steel) on the driver side. The pass side header had to be heated and persuaded into pointing the right way. What ever you do dont use a stock pan TRUST ME get the 7Qt moroso street stripw pickup believe me.......The exausht was done by no other than me you`ll only need some time a few hundred dollars to duplicate the sys. it comes together after the trans, so IT comes out with out removing the sys, which you`ll find convienet. The parts in the exausht are as follows: two ten foot sections of 3"pipe...4 90 degree mandrel elbows...7 45 degree elbows 2 flowmasters. have a exausht shop open the elbows to accept 3"pipe. only one side on each elbow has to be done. Ican duplicate it if you like, but it will take some time where are you located?

You`ll still have to have someone custom a set of pipes to tie into a "stock" sys with these headers, I had a 2 1/2 inch sys similar to the one i have now and when i went to the 3" , it was nite and day power!! Don`t cork up those ported heads with a single 3 or 4" pipe you`d be crazy to clamp down the exausht like that. I knoe small blocks have little if any power gains from going to a sys bigger than 3 " But you a big chevy likes at least a 5inch section area For the ten feet it has to travel.....My car runs faster in the 1/4 with exausht on!it wieghs about 35 #`s!

I had to notch my frame on both sides and lower A-arm on the driver side so that the headers would clear. The underside of the floor is also hammered up right around the collector flange. I use Merlin oval port heads and they also have a raised exhaust port. I'd love to put a tall deck block in the car but that would mean cutting out the floor for header clearance or having custom headers fabricated. I solved part of my clearance problems last year by taking out the solid motor mounts and installing a front motor plate dropping the engine down slightly.

The Hooker Supercomps are the smallest and cheapest BBC swap headers. Sanderson, Ed Quay and Lemons are other suppliers but they start at twice the cost of the hookers, have larger diameter tubes and collectors and fit much better. Good for a real big engine (496+)

I don't have an exhaust system. A 3" turnout bolted to the end of the headers is all I use. You'll need to take it into an exhaust shop and have a custom exhaust fabricated. True dual exhaust is still possible but it'll be a tight fit under the car.

There isn't any y-pipe off the shelf.
I also had to lift the motor and pull it forward, and I don't even
have the factory firewall anymore. These headers suck (Hookers).
If I had it to do over, I'd probably just build a 406 smallblock, or
go back to 2nd gen cars.

my 406 is daul TBI injected a whooping 1340cfm make a simple nice .......

540hp@6500rpm.

620TQ@5,000rpm.

at Flywheel tho but still plenty for a mid 12 street car....
