Best Way to Change Valveseals
Best Way to Change Valveseals
Hey guys. I got a great running 305 sitting on my engine stand that I would like to throw into my car for a winter motor. I would like to change the valveseals first. I have several set of seals for a SBC. So, what is the easiest way for me to change those puppies while the motor is sitting on the stand? Thanks.
ok I've done this a few times and its definately a lot easier outisde of the car
if you have access to compressed air then that is your best bet. Get a fitting for the compressed air to thread into the spark plug hole, have the air on so that when you take off the springs the air will hold the valves in place and not drop them.
You will need a valve spring compressor tool and a 5/8" ratchet and a lot of patience.
start by putting the fitting into the spark plug hole, now loosen up the rocker arms and take them off. Take the valve spring compressor tool and compress the spring
now tap it on the top to pop the spring down and free up the retainers.
Pull off the entire spring, still compressed.
Now you can see the valve seals sitting on the bottom of the valve stem, remove the old one and follow the instructions for the new ones (some are different than others)
basically you reverse the steps to get the stuff back on.
take your time and make sure that the retainers sit correctly when you put them back on. you will get a feel for exactly what you need to do, it will take some time to finish all of them but its not all that hard.
the other way to do it is to take off the head, or to stuff something into the cylinder head to keep the valves up but I like my way of using the air fitting
good luck

I had an answer to this, but Jayman beat me to it. Almost word-for-word too. It's not difficult but it IS time consuming. And a piece of advice: stuff rags into the oil passages that run down into the crankcase. You don't want to drop your spring retainers down there.
