battery drain when cranking

i haven't started the car in over 6 months.i put on new spark plug wires and cranked it.it wouldn't start.voltometer droped to zero when i tried to start it.i got told my alternator was dead right before i stopped driving it.the battery wasn't being recharged while driving.but would that cause this.i put a brand new battery in before i cranked it.i'm thinkin starter.i got it to fire up twice.but no more.sounded fine when it turned over.

How long are you letting it crank for? If you are sitting there for a few good minutes trying to get it to start, you will run the battery dry. If you get it started and your voltage is around 8-10 volts (I think, its the lower number on the dial) then you are running with a bad alternator, ideally you are looking for a 14-15v charge.
