your speaker wires wil be in sets of two. Just get a C or D cell battery (1.5v) and hook it up to the two wires. You'll be able to tell wich speaker it goes to by listening to the speaker poping. Then you can determine polarity by which way the speaker moves.

As for the the others... just use a test light and you'll know which wire does what.
Lights will only come on when the light switch is on.
Ignition will only come on when the key is in the on / acc position
Power will be on all the time.
then of course you hae ground and the antenna.

Total of 12 wires + the antenna.

 

Why dont you buy a harness instead of hacking up your wires?? but if you must.....

Here's another vote for a harness. They are cheap, and well worth the cost just for the simplicity... nevermind the benefits you get from NOT HACKING YOUR CAR.

 

I'd go for the harness too! Unfortunatly when I bought my car the wires were already hacked up!

If you don't understand wiring that well, then take it somewhere and have it done. I remember so many times when my friends would install a CD player then come to me asking why it didn't work. Had to explain to them that twisting the wire together and taping it wasn't a good idea, and using the cord from a broken toaster isn't the right thing to use as speaker wire.

 

Not only do you need to understand the wiring, but you need to have good wiring skills so that you have good, long lasting connections.

 

I recommend taking it to a local Best Buy or Circuit City, they usually run free installation if you buy a radio from them. All you have to buy is the parts which you have to buy anyway, and if anything does happen to go wrong with the workmanship they will fix it for no charge.

 

Or better yet, bring it to a non-chain store that has installers that actually know how to read, and usually know how to work wire crimpers.

 

Thats a pretty stupid thing to say. Ive seen people get their radios installed at "custom" shops where they are supposed solder everything, and they came in with no harness and wires spliced with electrical tape. I work at a Best Buy (well not for much longer) and not everyone who works in a chain store is a hack.

 

My friend brought his car to Best Buy for havng an amp and subs installed, not even a deck. Well they managed to destroy his interior and all the screws that holds the panels down. They killed battery by leaving the doors and trunk open for 4 hours+. It was isntalled wrong and fried his alternator and then caused a fire from the alternator overcharging caps in certain modules of his car. Then they said it would take an hour and he waited in teh mall for 4 or more hours I believe. Best Buy is my mortal enemy.

 

Not every chain store sucks, and not every local shop is great, but percentage wise, you're definately way better off at the local shops. It's not hard to find out what reputation your local shops have if you ask the right people.
