The stock air cleaner housing flows pretty good and is a cold air intake. Pretty much all modern cars have stock cold air intakes and the after market ones don't do a better job of getting in cooler air.

Agreed, but some might help dissipate the heat, like SLP and the tubes for the 4th gens. The cold air blowing from the front of the car might cool the tubes down and cool the incoming air down a tiny bit. Yeah it's not a huge difference but it's a theory.

EDIT: I just had a thought. I wonder if two 3 inch tubes that come together (like SLP's 4th gen style) into a 6 inch tube that closes down to the throttle body size would create a vaccum coming into the throttle body. (instead of having 2, 2.5" tubes going into a tube that's already the size of the throttle body) More then anything it'd probably create a bottle neck effect. But what ever, i'm just throwing ideas out there.

i know somebody did the math over at the TGO forum, and i can't remember what the number is, but i wanna say its less than 600 cfm that the 2 k&N squares for our cars can flow...and even K&N says thats not enough for built 350+ci engines, according to the charts and whatnot on there site...but I'm not sure of how restrictive the y piece is...it would be great to know because than i would know which is the more restrictive of the 2, because i'm thinking about either making a custom tubular CAI that goes down and around the radiator, or maybe fiberglassing dual cone filters onto the bottom of the factory air box...because that would solve the restriction as far as filters go..

How about I go to the racetrack next week and tell you if there was a difference?

Plan:
  • Run with stock Y-airbox with K&N filters
  • Run using stock Y-airbox without air filters
  • Run with my new Cold air setup

3rd gen MAFs suck period. The fins in them surve no purpose, unlike the 4th gen ones that straighten the air. Get an LT1 or LS1 MAF and just get some rubber tubing to go around it and clamp it down. problem solved. Kind of like what this guy did here with the blue connections.

Rob, a 3rd gen MAF will flow 680cfm with the screens in, and 720ish with the screens removed. The fins are nothing more than another restriction in the intake tract. More stuff in the way.

Still waiting on my guy to get me the parts. We were supposed to do it today but I can't reach him. I suppose he is still recovering from his camping trip hangover.
