Hey guys, i have a 92 25th anniversay z28 with the 5.7 and 700r4. my transmission is beginning to give me some problems and i'm looking to replace or rebuild. some say that rebuilding or paying someone to rebuild is a mistake. so i was looking to buy a reman. 700r4 or another option if possible. whats the best direction ? any ideas and mods to be made if i used somethin else ? thanks again

DONT DO IT!

Rebuild it. That way you are guaranteed to get your proper valve body back. Your transmission is a known quantity with Z28 specific shift points, Z28 specific torque converter, and more. If you get a reman, you are just as likely to get something that is rebuilt as a generic transmission with who-knows-what for shift points.

For the best bang for your buck, pull it yourself. With a Harborfreight transmission dolly ($50) and 36 inches worth of 3/8 drive extensions and a 9/16 swivel socket, you can have the transmission laying on the garage floor in less than 60 minutes if you are practiced. Without practice, it's about a three hour job to yank it out. Then you can run it down to the trans shop to let them rebuild. 1992 is the pinnacle of 700R4's, with the most updates. Pick the right transmission shop and they ought to be able to rebuild it for $500 or less, probably with better components than a standard reman.

Hey here's an idea: Call Thunder Racing. They are in Baton Rouge and they will know exactly what to do and where to go. Talk to Dave Tuschoff, extension 302.

A 350 turbo is almost a direct swap, you loose overdrive though.
Stronger tranny IMO................

That's a myth: The 700R4 shares many components and internal dimensions of the TH350. It's also the basis for the 4L60E transmission. It's plenty capable to 400 or 450 ft.lb if you put the correct components into it.

If you are willing to give up overdrive (and I'm not) get a TH400.

I pulled my 700r4 out and took it to local shop to rebuild it. They put in the best of everything and it cost me around 1100 out the door with a 2500 stall converter. I did alot of research of what i wanted in it. It handles over 400 lbs of torque that my car makes

I'm staying with the 700r in my camaro, If It ever died I would maybe do the 350t. Simply cause I got one lying around, also got the 400t but you loose some hp and tourqe to the wheels with a 400.
They are all options on replaceing the 700r, could even put in a 200r if you had too or possibly a 2 speed powerglide.

I was going on what I have read so far all over the web on the 700r, I don't know much about these cars yet. My input means very little lol.
I know fords, grown up around them my whole life. After money, blood, sweat, and long nights on my mustang I gave up on fords.

Anyways who cares, I shouldn't put input on something I didn't know anything about. Peace out.......................................

I replaced mine last year with one of these http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700MegaRaptor.htm. I got the Raptor Jr. They're in Bossier City, Louisiana. Free shipping. I'm happy with mine so far. There's a chart on down the web page that tells what upgrades each transmission has.
