It's easy to find once the tranny is in the car (without the shift mechanism that is).
It's been over a year since I did the swap but the backside of the hole was right before the tranny tunnel forms a U-shape. Hard to explain now that I try but there's a flatter section of the tranny tunnel and the hole I cut was at the back of this.

Well you don't technically widen it. If you car originally car was originally a 5-speed you just extend the hole back a inch or so, so the shifter doesn't hit the tunnel when you're in 2nd, 4th, and 6th.

The autos only have one circular hole about 1" in diameter near the front of that flat spot (for the shifter cable). Nowhere near big enough for even a t5 shifter. The auto shifter is just a bracket with a cable attached, it doesn't go through the floor.
