Almost bought an 95 Z yesterday.....

Yesterday while in school my friend Vince pulled me aside and told me his dad was selling his 95 Z28 camaro. So i decided, what the hell, i'll just go to look. Anyways, its a teal green A4 LT1 camaro with 89k miles on it. This car is clean! Engine bay is almost spotless along with the interior. IT has a performance exhaust(Raven), computer chip, and shift kit. His asking price is $7000, but his son vince(who happens to be a friend of mine......) told me that if i brought over $5000 he's take it. All i need to do is find out how to get that money!!

The problem with the whole situation is
1. I like 3rd gens
2. Im not all that familiar with the LT1(yet...)
3. MONEY!

SO i guess what my main question is, will i be happy if i decide to go LT1 over my beloved 350TPI????

Could i put a tuned port system on the LT1/would it be worth it???

Im so confused and need some help

Thanks,
Tim89Rs

I do not believe that the TPI setup will work an an LT1.

And of couse the question would be "why would you want to do that?"

if you dont have the cash for the car, then youre going to take a hard hit paying for it, another hard hit when your insurance skyrockets, and another hard hit if somthing goes wrong with it because its alot harder to work on with the engine bay being 1/2 under the windshield.

i wouldnt do it.
spend a little cash on your car and it will perform the same, be just as clean, and be cheaper to maintain easier to fix, and still cheap to insure.

oh and people with tpi's usually put lt1 intakes on their car for more performance.. not the other way around.

kevin 2.8- Getting this thing would mean selling my beloved1990 honda accord(best beater i've ever had, 144k miles, leaks no oil, and the very definition or RELIABLE) .I would have to give up that, and maybe loan a few $$$ from m parents for mods

Maybe if this car wasn't so damn clean it would be much easier to pass up on it. I'm a third gen madman, and personally never thought i would ever purchase a 4th gen over a third.

I guess im just going to wait till spring and buy a L98 thirdgen. But i have to admit, Those LT1's are extremely tempting..

Yes they are very very tempting so tempting that i've even thought about selling my Camaro to get one. But when I think about the insurance it convinces me to fix up what I have and just be happy I have a Camaro at all.

With that many miles on the 95 Z, be prepared to rebuild the tranny real soon. I also have a 95 Z with the 4L60E, I bought it with around 88,000 miles and the tranny went out shortly thereafter...and I don't even race it.

The 4L60E in my Tahoe crapped out at around 84,000 miles...

Search around the LT1 board, it seems the original A4s last around that mileage too.

I guess GM builds these trannys to last around 80k+ miles, lol.

Unless your friend had the tranny rebuilt sometime in the past, then you might be ok.

I'd do exactly what the other poster said, save that money and put it towards a third gen. 7k into a 3rd gen can go a loooong way.

splinter_cell- Exactly!!My friend jake has a 94Z A4 which he claims is modded like no other . But the fact is i stuck with him in my Rs

Im thinking my ideal car would be an 89 Iroc-Z with the 350TPI and G42 package(3.42 gears) That would be a start................If anyone has one, send me a pm

I'm a bit unbiased so let me lay it out for you.

1. The 4th gen was designed to be a better car. Less squeeks and rattles, handles better, more modern.
2. For $5,000 I'd take it. Heck of a lot better than buying a 3rd for $3,000 that needs a $2,000 paint job.
3. TPI sucks on anything. Discard this dream.
4. Don't let people scare you about the tranny's. They only let go at higher horse applications.
5. Don't let people scare you about the opti either. Some go, some don't. It's the equivalent to someone trying to scare you out of a third gen because the pickup coils are always dying.
6. It's all personal preference. I still don't know why there is such a 3rd gen vs 4thgen fight on this board. It's the same damn car. Anybody that thinks they gave it to one or the other because of what year their car is- is wrong. I've seen stock L98's run 14.0's. and I've seen stock LT1's run less...and vice versa.

So...if you like it, buy it. If not- stick to what you do like.

I sold my '89 Formula and finally replaced it with a 2002 Z-28 M6. I like the '02, but I'm looking for another 3rd gen. I'd sell my 2002 today if I could find a nice 3rd gen to play with and buy something "respectable" to drive to work.....
