Question air condition????

mine is in dire need of recharging.......what should i expect to pay; the local shop around me wants $220 to recharge because of the type it is.

is this a decent price, what do they usually charge for something like this? i have heard of people converting to the newer type....would this be a better idea?

i don't want to remove my a/c, i want a good working system; what should i do?

go ahead and have it recharged with the 134a all the shop has to do is change the valves. Its a hell of a lot cheaper per pound than R12.

134a = average price for 30 lbs 30.00
R12 = average proce for 30 lbs 60.00
you do the math

Make sure they are pumping the right kind in. Unless the car has been converted it will use the older kind. Are you sure you dont have a leak? If you dont have a leak you can buy a kit from an auto parts store and do it yourself. Goodluck my compressor had a leak and it cost me 900 bucks to get all new stuff and convert it over.

Also if you want to convert it over i think you have to replace the compressor and the condensor.

NO for the conversion you just need to change the valves. I just converted to 134a b.c R12 is so damn expencive and all I had to change was the valves

Count it again R12 is more like 600.00+ for 30 lbs. The shops around where I live charge ~ 75.00 per lb to recharge. When my Blazer A/C died I had it converted and had to have the compressor replaced for 500.00 total

Just go and have it recharged. YOU DO NOT have to change the compressor. The only think you have to change is the valves. thats it. I spent a total of like 50 bucks.

Look around the fittings and seals. If there is a leak grime and dirt will gather there.

I'm doing the conversion from R12 tomorrow. It's not that tough, so long as you're careful

what if after running the a/c for a small period there is a line of dirt or grease that forms parallel with the belts......??

that's not a good sign is it.

what would that mean?

What part of Mi are you from. I just had to recharge my trucks AC and I got it done at this Midas shop by me. They checked before recharging it to make sure the compressor was good and there were no leaks. They do a really good job. They are on woodward in Royal Oak. I suggest them if you are close.
