Ah, bought a carb, need some help with it though :)
Ah, bought a carb, need some help with it though :)
Ok, my budget only allowed a 200 buck carb, so I bought this one
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...13&prmenbr=361
Its the middle one, number 350-9907.
Its a good carb, but it doesn't have an electric choke, so what am I to do to 'choke' it in the morning? Where can I buy an electric choke for it anyways?
(I know how dumb those questions is)
I'm also wondering if there is anything i have to watch out for, or prepare to do, this is my first stock to aftermarket carb change, and the carb is just not clearing afew things on the manifold, its the stock manifold, so you all know the line up I assume, but anything within 1-1 1/2 inches of the carbs side causes clearance problems, I bought a spacer, but it doesn't help much, still clearance issues, The spacer I bought was a 'Hollow' spacer (no berrels, just hollow middle), I guess I need the one that has the 4 berrel holes (hard to explain, you know what I mean, I'm fried on working so hard over the past week, so I'm dumb to this stuff
)
I figure I will need to buy a manifold to fit the carb, but that is next month, right now I need to work with what I have, so what unethical modifications must I do to my car to make it work?
It does look pimp on my engine though, I will have to run without a hood until I get it cut the hood up abit (replacing it soon anyways, so I'm gonna take a sawzaw to it when I get the time, probably put a make shift scoop on it, so it doesn't look so bad)
Ah, just for those that are lazy like myself, its an edelbrock Performer 750 cfm Manual Choke, it says I can't use it in replacement of my rochester, but I have to, I have no choice really.
Another dumb question, I know my car is computer controlled, but is my carb computer controlled also?
Ah, I have afew more questions, but those are my main ones

Alright, I'll see how much I can help you. First off, there's not much you can do to choke it when you start it in the morning. Just start it and keep it idling at a good rpm by putting your foot on the gas until it warms up. Edelbrock sells electric choke kits, you just have to find them. Jegs should carry them.
Not much to worry about. All I have to say is your car will run much better if you replace your cc distributor with a vacuum advance distributor at some point. It'll run fine for now (I did the samething for two years), but you won't have any advance because the computer won't be getting any information from the tps. So to answer your question, your carb is not computer controlled, but it does provide information to the computer for other things.
Not sure on the clearance issues, I didn't have any, but I put an Edelbrock Performer intake on at the same time. You will have to run a new fuel line (I think) and don't forget an in-line fuel filter. Make sure you don't forget to attach the throttle return spring. You will have to plug the ported vacuum line on the carb. The vacuum fitting on the back for the brake booster should work fine.
The carb should fit, my 600 cfm w/electric choke fit fine. Maybe a 750 cfm is physically larger
. Do what ever you have to to make it fit, just don't break anything that is vital. Don't worry about any of the sensors attached to the carb, they won't matter anymore.
I could help more if you could explain what exactly is in the way. Hope I helped a little.

Ah, the major thing that is getting in the way is the EGR, beyond that, nothing else gets in the way, Minus some wires and such, which only get in the way because they can, they do have a wire holder, which I need to replace though
after I replace them, the wires will be handled, the major problem is the EGR, or whatever the large disc style thing is on the passanger side back manifold, I'm sorry, I want to say EGR, but I don't have my manual, and although I am familiar with my engine, I don't want to say its something and be wrong, thats just embarrassing
I noticed that another person has asked what to do about the egr, so I'm waiting for that thread to get active abit, unless someone wants to post what to do with it here
I found an electric choke on Summit, real cheap, now I just have to find a good manifold, then start saving money for them
my rochester cut my hand up like..... something really easy to cut, so I can't work on my car this week, such a pain, that carb is a curse man, right when I removed it, my step dad went to the pick and pull to get some other stuff for the car, ended up falling from a car, and dislocating his shoulders (yup, both) and now my hand is sliced turkey
Such a pain in the ***
you wouldn't believe how long it takes to type "my length" of a post with your right hand (I'm left handed, which is injured) **laughs**
Ah, thanks for the help so far bad86z28, any other help would be greatly appreciated, I'm at a lost on what to do with my EGR... can I just take it off and fashion a hard gasket over it? I figure not
but I guess its worth asking

Ah, another quick question for bad86z28
I read your Sig, does those bolt ons work well together? I'm looking for a good combo of components to eventually 'refresh' my engine abit, at 166k miles, its one tired engine
Just hit me to ask

Yea, that's the egr. Just get rid of it
. The people I first bought my car from had gotten rid of the egr. They basically cut it off and welded up the hole. Note: I would not do this. I really don't know how its connected, so I can't tell you how to disconnect it. I noticed your in California. Do you have to worry about emissions? If you do, you'll have to find a way around it. Getting rid of it won't affect the performance of your car (its just there for emissions purposes). But, whatever you do, just make sure it doesn't leak or your car will idle and run like crap. While your at it you might as well disconnect everything elso associated with, just plug anyhting that will create a vacuum leak.
When you do get a manifold, look into one without an egr provision. I think the best one would be an edelbrock performer or performer rpm. Preferably the latter.
The bolt on's that I have work well together, plus they were cheap. There's easily less than a grand in my car with all that stuff. The free-flowing exhaust helped the most (I don't have cats either). The Flowmaster catback was the most expensive. Don't get me wrong, its far from the fastest thing on the planet, but its faster than it was when I bought it.
Sucks about your hand...wear some gloves

Cool, then I will make or get a gasket to block it off, smog is becoming an issue though
I'm starting to wonder how much more I can take off before I have a problem with my friends at the local smog place, they said as long as its not "really bad" then it should be a problem, I guess I should try to keep it looking as stock as possible, ah, but if all else, I can just make it a track car or something, I'm just working on it to work on it, not to worried about driving it anywhere soon
Yea, my hand was a a stupid accident, I need some gloves, and abit more patients
then this kind of stuff wont happen as much.
Well thats about it so far, Minus tuning and what not, the carb seems to be going smoothly, my only problem now is what to do with the linkage on the car to the carb, it doesn't go anywhere, the manual says I have to take the linkage off the old carb and put it on the edelbrock, but I'm not sure if I should, thought I would ask first, as I would hate to ruin that carb after everything I did to get it

I don't think I replaced the linkage on my edelbrock with the stock one. I just worked everything so it would work right. I forget exactly how it was done (it was a long time ago). You should be able to get it to work. Just don't do anything you can't reverse. Good luck getting it all together. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
By the way, cutting yourself is part of working on cars. I judge the difficulty of my work by how many cuts I get
