- Adjusting Your Kick-Down Cable for Automatics (TPI Shown) -
I figured I'd go ahead an post this little guide for those who still do not understand what's involved in setting the kick-down cable for the automatic transmissions (700R4). The method I use is actually quite simple.
Some refer this cable as the "T.V. Cable." Behind the throttle body, on the driver's side, locate the cable running from the transmission to the throttle linkage assembly. You should see a "D" shaped button. This is on a typical TPI engine. Carb / TBI models may have a similar type of button, setup differently. I am unsure of the setups on these vehicles.
While pushing in the "D" button, pull back the cable until it stops. I couldn't use both of my hands because I was using one for the camera. ;-) You can either pull (like I did there) or push from the front. Once the cable is pulled back (towards the firewall) all of the way, go ahead and release the button.
Push the throttle to WOT (Wide Open Throttle). During this, you will see the cable clicking back forward. You should be able to just use the gas pedal. If the throttle linkage is not adjusted right, your car may shift late. In this case, you may have to use the linkage at the throttle body to push the throttle to WOT. I would also investigate a possible loose or misadjusted throttle cable to the gas pedal.

Am i supposed to just pull back towards the front of the car until the cable stops While pushing that button?
Is there a possibility of pulling the whole cable out? cuz you know i dont want that to happen.

I have a question about this, since my TV cable seems to be acting up a bit.
Should the D shaped button you depress on the TV cable be flush with the the surrounding plastic or should it actually be sunk into the housing? Mine is sunk down a bit, as if it is already pushed in, and I'm wondering whether this is normal or not.

It sits in there a ways even when it is released. You have to push in on it fairly hard to allow the cable lock to release- it'll take some fairly serious finger pressure.

Folks, Damon is one of the REAL treasures of these bulletin boards. He just LOVES to help people out and truly is the guru of QJets
You have to be careful it doesn't skip or jump a couple of notches. I've always found it best to reset it then have a buddy push the gas pedal into the carpet(no mat)and then push the button and remove all slack. You then can get it perfect by moving a notch either way to dial it in, but NOT more than 2 or damage could occur. Making it looser by moving it forwards means later, harder shifts; making it tighter by moving back towards the firewall means earlier softer shifts. The cable also must be in EXCELLENT condition, or it will shorten the life of the transmission drastically.
I've rebuilt a few and this always works for me.
Make sure your car downshifts correctly, as when passing, after ajustment.
