Horror stories about changing your tranny fluid!? LOL. What kind of stories say NOT to change the fluid? You got to change the fluid, cause over time it loses it's lubricating properties, and clutch material and fine metal shavings contaminate it. You need to change it and the filter every 30k or so. Oh and as far as tranny coolers go, just make sure to get the appropriate model from a retailer, and install instructions will be included. I did one on my old truck and it was simple.

just do a search on alll the forums, guys change thier fluid and then there tranny starts to slip because the old fluid had metal fibers and all sorts of crap that held it together. when your fluid is orange what does that mean. and how do i get the filter out, what if the gasket doesent come with the filter and how do i put the new filter up there. where talking tranny here

Sounds like old wives tales to me. Of course, some old wife's tail is not to be sneezed at. Anyways, you unbolt the pan and the tranny fluid rushes out and when you take the pan off you see the filter.

If your tranny is slipping or going to slip, whatever you di, it will need a rebuild. It could be coincidence. Just change your fluid regularly and once in a great while, rebuild your tranny.

I have a tranny cooler on my 700R... it made a world of differencee. After about 20 minutes of cruising, she'd heat up enough my shifts wouldn't be as firm...with the tranny cooler, every 1-2 shift chirps the tires.

I just had my mechanic put it on... he charged me $10 for the install and he even had to work on some stuff to make it fit where I wanted it.

Now I'm wondering where to go with my B&M oil cooler. >_> That's the trick. I've got the regular radiator fan...the two auxiliary fans on the other side, the tranny cooler mounted in the nose of the car---and no room for the oilc ooler. lol

Yes, tranny coolers are the best $30 you could ever spend on your 3rd gen. It usually at least doubles the life of your tranny. You got to like that, seeing as trannies cost a fortune!

Don't want to hijack the thread, but anyone have thoughts on oil coolers? How necessary they are? If they're as useful as the tranny cooler, where to put one, the best one to buy, etc. I know the TA/Z28/Etc came with oil coolers, so I'm assuming if you're going to soup up your base model, that'd be a good idea?

where is a good place to mount the coolers, and can you get a cooler that just mounts to the subframe and works off of fin to air cooling, or maybee has its own little fan. anyone heard of those ideas.

Z28's came with oil coolers?
(also sorry for hijack)

I believe it gets mounted infront of the radiator.
Trannies dieing after fluid changes are not wives tails, it does happen. Generally if you have gone more than 40-60k on the fluid most tranny shops refuse to do a fluid change unless you sign a waver. I guess its a good way to get a free tranny though, if you have a shop do it.

well i added my tranny cooler today, took me 3 hours cause i work messy and misplace everything a a 2 square foot area, i dropped a fitting in a quart of tranny fluid and looked for it for 45 mins before i relized, my question is, the condenser sits in front of the radiator, and is what my tranny cooler is laying on, because the hose clamps are digging into the fins, but on the trannt return line i got enough hose on there just to clamp it after the flare, do u think it will blow off in time, i punched the car and went pretty fast and solid thru all gears and came back andhad no problems, shifts smoother now, can really feel the drop by touching supply and return lines.
