A4 guys HELP!

Alright. I'll be driving along minding my own business when a guy pulls up next to me wanting to race, im currently in 4th, so I punch it, it downshifts to 2nd and goes,4,000 RPMs, 5,000 RPMs, 6,000 RPMs, and finally 7 and hangs there for about 3 seconds and finally shifts. What is wrong? Is the torque converters slipping or what? Help me out.

7K!?!

Oh that is bad, 7k on a third gen. (stock?) Hopefully you didn't lose...

Anyway, check your tranny fluid level, has it been changed recently, etc. Doesn't sound like a t/c to me, since that has nothing to do with shifting.

Also, just a hint, never race in 4th. The tranny doesn't *seem for me* to shift as hard, shift at the right spot, etc. Especially if you're at the track, leave it in 3rd.

TV cable affects shifts, so you might want to check it for proper adjustment:

Ok. Tranny fluid. My dad (old fart) says that on his Chevelle you could'nt just change the fluid, you had to drop the pan and change filter and all. Is that necessary with my car or is it just like an oil change?

TV Cable. Can someone tell me EXACTLY where this is located on my car. I be much abliged. Thanx

WHY did you let it wind up that high? I swear i thought tpi engine would actually STOP accelerating at like 6500 at least...lol, just from the restrictiveness of the intake or something!

my rule of thumb: Don't trust an auto trans to downshift, especially if the car is making decent/big power I suggest manually putting the car in what gear you want, and upshift form there, or throw it back in Drive for auto upshifts.

Smell the fluid first i'd suggest. If it doesn't smell burnt or bad, it might just be something sticking internally.

Same thing happened to me at the track.
My guess, is that a small peice of debris lodged itself in a port in the valvebody, and caused the trans to stay in gear instead of shifting?

I don't know, it ran fine after that

It'll shift fine and dandy while normal driving, but only when Im racing will it not shift at the right RPM.
