91 305 TBI - roller block/cam?

Hey all,

I'm a pre-80's mechanic so I don't have info such as this.

Just bought a 91 firebird saturday and it has a rod knocking after it heats up. Called to check on a short block and the man said all 305 TBI's in 91 was roller cams. Is this correct? $495 for short block and $950 for long.

I need to know so I can have a block and parts waiting for when I pull this one out. I'd rather not wait until I get it apart to buy the parts.

Thanks,
Doug

It's roller. Everything from '87 up is roller, except for some truck blocks.

Yes it's a roller but whose to say if it was not swapped out with a non-roller? One way to find out is to take the intake manifold off.

The owner of this car never even changed the plugs, much less the motor. It was not taken care of by a mechanic. Put gas in and drive.

So are you planning on going with the short block and going with a better set of heads?

The truck blocks were roller blocks, just not made rollers. The raised bosses were still there, they just werent drilled and tapped for the retainer. Thats pretty cheap prices. Are those remans or used?

Re: 91 305 TBI - roller block?

the engine prices were for remans with everything new. A few mechanic shops recommended this dealer so I decided to chance it. It gets me back on the road the quickest. The 78 Bonanza Blazer w/ sb 400 w/ 1 ton running gear is eating a chunk out of my rear in gas.

Not going with different heads. Just going to get it back running so I can drive it to work. I don't want to change the injectors to a bigger size to go 350 (if even needed, not sure). And the 350 is the same price. My hot rodding days are behind me for now. I'm building rock crawlers for fun now.

If I was going to build a performance car again it would be a mid 70s camaro. 74 to 77.

In Louisiana, 1980 and above has to pass visual inspection and that includes pipes and mufflers. I just don't want to have those problems again - been there and done that and bought way too many t-shirts.
