Question MAF to SD conversion

OK, I am contemplating doing this conversion but have have yet to find a really good reason to do so. I know the SD is easier to tune but I have no idea how to do it, so I will have to rely on some one elses tuning. I am pretty sure I can learn but skeptical.

My current setup is a 355/T56, SuperRam, LPE 219* cam, 113 ported heads, roughly 10.75:1 comp, 24lb injectors, headers, no EGR, no air pump. gutted and descreened MAF. I currently have 3.23 gears until I get off my butt and put my 4.10's in (broke my last set!)

thanks
Chris

Re: MAF to SD conversion

If you have your current setup tuned well I wouldnt worry about it so much. I just did a swap on my bird. I did this because it will eventaully see a supercharger, so I dont want to fight a MAF sensor with a supercharger. Most people convert due to this reason, because it is easy to max out MAF. I know I may catch flack for saying that, their has been lots of discussions about this topic......

Re: MAF to SD conversion

This is a topic that's been covered a lot, and invariably turns into either a flame-fest or a battle of opinions. My opinion is this: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If your engine pulls more air than the MAF can handle, then it's worth the swap. If your MAF sensor goes out, it CAN be cheaper to change to SD than to replace the MAF, if you know where to look and what to look for. If the MAF system works fine and meets your needs, don't mess with it.

I agree with if it aint broke etc..
The MAF shouldnt be a restriction at that hp level, i dont think SD will get you that much.Still, its not a hard swap if youve got your heart set on it.
I agree with speed density swap on cars that will see boost, especially since 2 and 3 bar MAP sensors are available.Good luck.

WEll, actually nothings broke and the tune is good for mail order. I guess I need to hook up a scanner and see what kind of numbers the MAF is giving. I am not trying to hog bandwidth with this question, just tryting to make an informed decision.

Re: MAF to SD conversion

Well the swap is pretty simple just takes some time and good wiring diagrams. I would have someone hookup a scanner to your car, see if you are maxing the MAF at 255 counts if you are at considerable less rpm than your max rpm you will benefit from swapping if not I wouldn't worry about it, MAF works fine as long as your aren't maxing the sensor

Re: MAF to SD conversion

I have yet to hear of anyone who's even come close to maxing out the MAF on a naturally aspirated motor. With an upper limit of 255 g/s, the highest flow I've heard was a highly modded 383 with a flow of ~220 g/s. Forced induction is another game altogether.

Re: MAF to SD conversion

Because of the ve tables, SD is harder to tune, not easier. Maxing the maf means nothing, you keep adding fuel in the pe vs rpm and pe vs coolant tables, so it doesn't matter.

I just helped tune a 95 z28 with a vortech blower, and he was maxing out the maf, still had to add fuel with the pe vs. rpm table, and the highest value is currently in that table that the ecm can handle right now.

You aren't going to gain anything, but it's your car, you can do with it what you want.
