89 WS6 Dual-cat exhaust question

I just bought a 1989 Formula WS6 which needs a exhaust starting at the y-pipe. To save some money can I use a single cat y-pipe instead?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Sure, you aren't required to keep the dual cat option if your state doesn't require you to do so with a visual inspection of equipment. You'll lose a few horses but nothing substantial maybe 10hp.

you wont lose hp if you go to a 3" y pipe. The stock dual cat exhaust option isnt all that fantastic the exhaust gets sooo narrow in some points. Just get a nice y-pipe and itll wake that car up good.

The Y-Pipe is after the dual cats. I would leave them in place for the extra horsepower. Definetely get an aftermarket "Y-Pipe" it is worth some horsepower. Like was said above get a good 3" mandrel bent cat back system. By the way the Y-Pipe should be 2 1/2 inch on the two inlet sides and 3" on the oulet side.

Me I just went with the 3.50" Mufflex cat back system with the recently released 3.50/3.50 inch Magnaflow muffler. I also have the dual cats. Another thing here in SoCal the guys are converting there cars to the dual cat system for the extra power.

Talking Re: 89 WS6 Dual-cat exhaust question

So I can just buy a new y-pipe, cat and cat-back exhaust and call it a day.

It isn't required here to pass visual here to my knowledge, its needs a new y-pipe and new cats because the originial cats were cutout, and the guy did a horrible job welding in the off-road pipes, in addition it also needs a new exhaust. There's holes everywhere from the y-pipe back.

Trying to save money for now until I figure out what TPI motor is in the car (305/350) I figure its a 305, and the future plans are gonna be a LS1 or LT1 engine and 6speed. The interior was gutted so there isn't a RPO sticker.

Its a 5 speed/TPI car.

Thanks for the help!!

What he said

The 350 (TPI or otherwise) was NOT available with a 5 spd. You have a 305 car. I had 2 and loved them both.
