89 305 TPI swap questions

I am going to be swapping out my L69 for an 89 305 TPI. The engine is complete although it doesn't come with anything other than what's on the block. I know I need the fuel pump, MAF sensor, air box, wiring harness, and ECM.

My questions are...

1. In 89' they eliminated the cold start injector. Can I still use a prior years wiring harness or does it have to be specifically for an 89'?

2. In 89' all memcals were programmed for VATS but still carried the same part number (1227165) can I use a previous years ECM to eliminate VATS or do I have to use an 89' ECM and get a VATS eliminated chip?

3. Can anyone tell me what else I am going to be looking into when I start this project?

I'm on a limited budget. I would like to have an L98 but this was practically given to me and my L69 died so I figured on upgrading later. I would also like to go with the painless wiring but cant afford it right now. There are a million things that would probably make the job easier but I can't afford it. My Camaro is my camaro and not going anywhere so buying a new one is out.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: 89 305 TPI swap questions

You should do alot of research before doing this swap, if not done properly you will be WAY over budget very quickly. That said you need an '89 wiring harness, you should not need a MAF as Im pretty sure '89 was the first year for speed density, all sensors, you should have a custom computer and ecm that will by-pass vats (this is the easy but more costly way to get around vats). Im not positive if you could use a stock '89 computer because of the system being a speed density.
The best investment you could make is to search these threads and really research this. I wish I would have known about this site and thirdgen.org before starting mine, I would have saved an awful lot of time and money.

89 was the changeover years for alot of stuff]

88 had MAF, cold start inj., no VATS
89 had MAF , no cold start Inj. and VATS
90 had SD, no cold start inj., and VATS

if you want to use a cold start inj., use a 88 PROM
so to do away with the cold start inj., you need a 89 PROM with VATS removed
if you want speed density, use a 90-92 PROM w/VATS deleted, and the correct harness(or mod the MAF harness)

Re: 89 305 TPI swap questions

fuel is going to be a major issue,

you need a return line plus you mian line need to be high pressure,

and you'll need the FI tank so you get an intank pump,

harness as long as its 86-89 you'll be fine, just leave the cold start wire hanging

if you don't have a cold start injector you'll need an 89 chip,
its easy to have a new chip burned and have the VATS elimnated,

the vehicle harness side of the ecm might be an issue,

you could just put your fuel pump on a switch, also acting as an anti theft device,

I'll post some more info when I get home, got a boat load of wiring info at home on my desktop
