'88 2.8, Fuel Pump/Gauge Sending Unit?!?

I'm looking at an '88 project car with a 2.8 liter V6. On this car, the fuel pump has gone out, and the gas gague doesn't work. I've checked around on the price of a fuel pump, and am able to get an AC Delco pump for around $70. However, when I asked about the sending unit for the gas gague, I was quoted a price of $500!

My question: is there some other way to make the gas gague work? I mean, do I have to buy the entire assembly for $500, or is the sending unit available separately? I can't see spending putting that kind of money into the car, especially when the price of the sending unit would be more than I would pay for the car.

Without taking out the pump assembly, we cannot tell if you could somehow clean the contacts or what.

Now knowing how hard it is just to get to the fuel pump/sending unit assembly, I'd like to replace everything (if possible) just to keep from having to do the job again.

If it is like the TPI units, you will have to drop the tank. You will have to lower the rear end and then drop the tank to get at it. You also should get a couple of gas tank straps in case you have to cut the ones you have on out. Also the tank sealing ring gasket too.

Ok, the tank is finally out.....thank the Lord. Straps are intact, and I didn't drop the rearend at all. Now.....how do I get the new tank back in without bending the filler neck?

You have to drop the rear end. Lower shock bolts, sway bar, and brake line. PIA, but not more than a couple of hours....

Oh, you can bend the filler neck like crazy when you are taking it out if you aren't using it again. Puting it back is not so easy. Have the rear end supported when you try inserting the tank back/
