86Z shifter assembly to 89 IROC???
Hey guys, well, I hate the way the shifter feels on my IROC. That is my one complaint. My 86 had such a nice smooth shifter assembly. The round **** made it very easy to go from R to D and so on.
My question is, are they swapable? They were both 700R4 cars, and I was thinking about doing that..... Any ideas? Experience? Comments? Thanks all

Other than the shape of the ****, the shifter is 100% identical. If yours shifts hard, the cable could be getting seized, or the shift lever may be in need of lubrication.
since the shifter is the same, if you wanted to go to a round ****, you could always do that, but if everything else is working properly, the shape of the **** isn't going to make nearly enough of a difference to matter.

The non-rond ****ers mount with a pin, not like the little c-clip in the round *****.... That is why I wanted to verify that they were the same or different. My other shifter was jst a lot smoother, all 88+ ****ers I have ever felt were this way..... jst not fun to drive..

Hehe, this is weird. What Jim85Iroc is saying is that the shifter assemblies are identical.
To go from R to D, just slam it back. There's no need for a button or anything. I honestly don't notice anything being smoother about it. It seems similar to all the other cars I've driven, with an auto.
The shifter assembly, by itself, has no tension. The tension comes from the cables and the shifter lever on the tranny. You'll know what I mean when you take it apart and it swings around freely in your hand. If the tension is from the shifter assembly, it will need some lube at the joint, but that is unlikely. I'd look at the cables for a more likely culprit, but take off the upper console and take a peek. Everything you want to know is there.
If you want a nice shifter, you may want to look at an aftermarket shifter, such as B&M.

Ideally this is what I want.... The shifter assembly from my 86, or if I can get this one to work better, then keep it, but use the round 82-86 style shift ****, since no one makes a nice plain shiffter **** for autos. I want the non leather one, and I am going to paint it white. Should give it a nice appearance, something different!

I know what you mean about liking the round **** better. Both shifters are not the same. To do the swap you will need a shifter from a Camaro before 87 and buy the ****, button, clip, and little steel piece that goes in the button. The round **** not only looks better but it works cooler, like how the button stays down as you progress from Park to 2. Although I think painting 1 would be kinda stupid, but thats MO.
