85 l98 300hp ????

Whats my best choice to reach 300hp with a 1985 l98, I will be pulling heads and cam,
1. cam choices?
2. will it need tuning?
3. intake mods?
I would like to keep it under 5500rpm if possible.

Thanks

Yours is a roller motor, do they make a comparable flat tappet cam?
I would like to switch to a roller if I could, use like a lt1 cam and lifters & get by cheaply .

You are right but many of the 3rd genners have swapped out engines on their Tired 305s & 6s.

One way! This was in an 87 Corvette.

401wrhp. ZZ4 350 short block, reworked L98 aluminum heads(bigger valves, 5 angle valve job, pocket port and port match), LT4 hot cam kit(1.6 rockers), 58mm throttle body, 24lb/hr injectors, adjustible fuel pressure regulator, High performance fuel pump(in tank), CAI, LPE/edelbrock superram air intake, Borla cat back w/high flow cat, and of course programming. Over $5,000.
But all was new so it could be done for less.
Also I would not do this combo today, better parts out there now!

This engine had excelllent idle, mileage, and was emissions compliant. I originally intended to do this with the 385 fast burn heads, but no TPI base was available at that time. It is now!!

the hydraulic cam won't matter much at the horsepower level you're looking for. Vortec heads, SDPC base and SLP runners should easily get you there with the right cam.

Get the best heads you can because they can be reused in a different motor. Vortech heads have to use one manifold only for TPI and they are heavier. Lighten front will help you launch a little.
