Question '84 Z28 running hot...I think

Hello. I am trying to find someone who knows what is "normal" for a 1984 Camaro Z28 as far as coolant temp goes under highway driving on a hot summer day (by hot, I mean about 30 deg C/ 90 deg F). My car is equipped with metric guages and occassionally sneaks up to about 105 C..which seems pretty darn hot! Your feedback is appreciated! Tracey

Hey bro, well, I am very bad with metrics, but I know that in my Z, the stock fan switch didn't turn the fan on till about 220F, which is just plain too damn hot. I switched it out with the 200 unit that goes on at 200F and off at 180F. I would like to even get a better one, but when the first one went out, I just spliced into the wires and rigged up a switch of my own, now I leave it on all the time around town and I turn it to automatic on the freeway where its not needed so much. These cars of ours don't have a big place for air to cool the place, so a better fan switch and lower thermostat is a good idea, if you want the motor to live for a while. These high temps take a lot of time off the block! Hope that helps!

Cool

Thanks for the speedy reply. I was thinking about a manual fan switch too. I'm gonna call a speed shop tomorrow and see what they can offer as I have found the dealership and rad shops around here think the car's temp is fine when I'd like to have it running a lot cooler. I already replaced the thermostat with a 160 F one. Thanks again for your reply. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow. Tracey

Here's the conversions.
105C = 221F
105c is what's at the centre of my temp guage. After that, it's a short trip to the red zone. Gonna look into that fan switch today.

I forgot to ask you...where did you find that dual snorkel air cleaner? I want one too, but they're rarer than hen's teeth around here!
