84 Z28 HO Tranny Trouble
Hi everyone. I have recently parked my 84 Camaro and am making it my weekend cruiser. It has the 305 4b HO L69. I believe the tranny is a 700r4. However it has recently not wanted to shift. It runs great but wont shift to 2nd unless i hold it it a EXTREMELY high rpm in 1st. The same goes to get it to shift to 3rd and so on.
My initial thought was clutch problem. After further review i am starting to believe it might concern a vacuum modulator/TV. After doing research and not having my car currently with me (parked in a garage for storage for winter, dont have my own garage YET). I was wondering if anyone knew which to look for on this transmission. Also if there is any other things you think it could be please share. Thank you everyone.

Yes. the Throttle Valve (TV) detent switch must be correct. There is a "D" shaped button on the side of the switch, which is located up by your throttle linkage on the carb. It sits back behind the carb on the driver's side of the intake manifold. It's probably pulled too far out. Push in the "D", and slide the plastic slider back into the switch housing. Then slowly open the throttle by hand, letting the switch ratchet one click at a time until you get to the throttle stop. The cable should now still be tight with no slack, and about half to one inch of the black plastic slider should be sticking out of the switch housing. That should fix things. If it doesn't, then you will next want to check the governer, which is mounted on the passenger side of the transmission. It's behind a steel plate, and although difficult to get at, it's not impossible to check it without pulling the transmission. If the governer looks okay and the springs are all intact, then you are pretty much out of options and you'll want to pull the transmission.
Relax, pulling a 700R4 out of a 1984 third-gen isn't as hard as it might seem.
The first time I did it, it took four hours.
The second time, it took two hours.
The third time was done in ninety minutes,
and the fourth time was in & out in 59 minutes.
