.....when I had an '84 Camaro HO 305 something that I did that made a
big seat of the pants difference was a Hypertech Chip along with a low
temperature thermastate. It was either a stage II or III chip, don't remember.
Of the many different little things that I did to it the chip made the most
difference. Later I put nitrous on it and then a bigger motor which of course
made a much bigger difference than the chip did. But for some reason the
chip IN MY CAR made a big difference! Even bigger gain than a cam &
carb change. just a thought, Bill....

....I got mine from Hypertech. But-t-t-t-t after I recommended this to you I did
a search under 'hypertech and chip' on the third Gen board to see what other people thought & people recommended that you DON'T get a Hypertech. They say to have someone 'burn' a custom chip for you. Well when I got my Hypertech there were no custom chips, in fact VERY few people even owned Computers! (1885 or so). So now, in my opinion, if you have a lot of other mods I would probably go with a custom chip. But if your not doing that much I would go with the Hypertech. I DON'T WANT TO MISLEAD YOU but this much I do know, the Hypertech Chip made a HUGE difference IN MY CAR! Big Time, to say the least! And it was only like $150 bucks {a stage II or III, don't remember}. In fact, that was the very first mod I did to it. Followed by a Flowmaster { with no cat}, K & N {with cold air intake through dual 4" ducts that ran from the inside headlight holes}, cam along with a carb from the Carb Shop {but no head work}, 4:56 Posi gears, Higher stall converter, a Built Art Carr 700r4, also had distributor work done. The Chip made more of a difference than any of the other mods singled out. Then I put nitrous on it, which of course made the biggest difference of all. Ah-h-h-h but then I wasn't happy with the 125 jets so I went to 150 which wasn't enough so I went to 175 which, of course still wasn't enough so I went to 200, and BLAMMMMMM.... no more motor....
but anyway, back to my point, the chip worked for me..... good luck with your build up..... Bill...

I have an ADS Superchip in my current 1984 computer. Check Summit, I think they still offer them. If they dont, then maybe I can dig around my old dusty pile of chips to see if there's another one laying in there. The ADS Superchip gives you an advanced timing curve, and delays TCC lockup until you are cruising in overdrive. It's a great chip and only costs $40.
BTW, You want power from your L69? Get some Edelbrock TES headers(or Hooker with Y-pipe), bolt on a new converter, then put in a Hooker Cat-back. I'd start there. Other additional places to find some power are in the tweaking of the carb, and getting a really good cold air induction setup. The L69 runs hot, and I once did a study in 1996 whereas the inlet air temperature to the carb was hitting 180 degrees during the summer. CAI reduced the inlet temperature to 120 degrees, and a SOTP difference was very, very evident.
Other changes you might consider is replacing the valve retainers with some Comp Cams steel retainers and good locks, then installing a Comp 981 valve spring. That will restore your top-end punch and reduce the annoying flat spot at 4800 - 5200 RPM.
Lastly, replace your torque converter with a 2400 RPM stall speed converter. I usually suggest Turbine Technologies for a decent cheap lockup-style converter, as they are only $160 or so. That converter was the one where I had my all-time best E/T.

Re: 84 CamaroZ28 L69 HO motor...i want speed!please help
Okay I had a 86 monte SS with that engine L69 ho 305.
I went 16.2 bone stock. I had to put in a cam since the old one went flap like my prom dates chest.
I had a 224in 224ex 440in lift 450ex lift w/1.5 rockers 110 lobe seperation
Performer RPM intake with 500 edelbroke carb
headman 1 5/8's long tubes with flow master 2 1/4 in exhaust
2500 stall w/junkyard 700r4 with $30 shift kit
stock rear which had a LSD and 3:73's
torque thrust D wheels heavier than stock alum
Accel super coil msd module
With 3670 w/ 1/4 tank it went 14.2 not bad for a 305 with 160,000
than I swapped out the 500 to a holley 600 and went 13.9. I was happy cause now I need a helmet to race. I had a bad valve guide so I did the heads and a 3 angle valve job with a msd 6al box and 4:10's it went 13.71 @at 103mph.
I Know you car is lighter and I know you could go faster with the set up I had on the monte. But you need to ditch the computer on these 80's cars.
I think that car was more fun then the one I have know. I was going just as fast as the other 305 guys with a 100 shot and that 110 lobe seperation sounded bad ***!

No, the Monte Carlo nor the Trans Am have dual snorkle air cleaners. I used a modified air cleaner that was hooked to four-inch aluminum dryer duct. I routed the ductwork to a scoop which was mounted to the lower valence on the leading edge of the lower aero effects like so:

Later, I tossed out the scoop and used the factory hood scoop with this arrangement, which was even more successful:
