82 to 92 big block camaros

I just finished having a 489 ci stroker big block built for my '91 Camaro RS. I'm basically taking any suggestions or opinions concerning trans, suspension, frame, and exhaust routing to see what others have done in comparison to what I plan on doing. Anyone with or who knows someone with a 3rd gen. Camaro or Firebird with a big block, please respond with your ideas, and include web sites if any are known. Thanks.

I like that! Get the biggest motor you can and then worry about the small stuff

Thanks for the the post. Your idea for the exhaust is pretty nice. I was going with a similar setup. I have a 4" mufflex cat back exhaust system, that I was planning on adapting to the Hooker headers. Off the headers themselves, I'm going to run 3" pipe, and on the drivers side I'm going to cross the trans tunnel right after the tail piece of the trans. Then I want to merge the 2 3" pipes into a 4" collector, which will mate up to the remainder of the system. I know it would probably be more beneficial with 2 3" pipes all the way back, but for ease of changing this "y-pipe" for one fabbed up with cats would make it much easier come time for emmisions. Anyway tell me what you think, and thanks again for the ideas!!

You really think you`d pass an emission test even with cats?

Mine isn't street legal so I don't have to worry about all that stuff. That makes it a very easy swap

Ahh, 2 cats, a little dry gas, and a little tuning on the carb. should get it through the tailpipe test. I'll find out when I get there.

I believe ya on the headers, a couple of people have told me that. A guy I talked to out at my local track has a 502BB in an '82 Firebird, and he told me the the drivers side wasn't to bad, but he did say the pass. side #2 cyl. tube needed a little work to squeeze it past the frame rail. Any hints or suggestions you might have for squeezing them in would be great.

P.s. Your 84 Z28 looks great., Have you ever raced and got a number on it? Just curious. Thanks for any input you might have.

You're pushing the limits with that big engine and Hooker Supercomp headers. They're only 1-7/8" primary and 3" outlets. The only thing good about them is that they're the cheapest swap headers.

I don't think there are any more that make BBC headers for a third gen. Expect to pay at least twice as much for a large tube header compared to Hooker Supercomps.

Another option is to buy a kit and make your own.

Hints as to putting in Hooker Supercomp headers. #1 if the engine is still in the car and has a deep sump oil pan, the headers won't go in. #2 It's easier and faster to pull the engine, insert the headers then drop the engine back in. Of course since the Hooker Supercomps are NOT a direct fit since some modifications are required, you'll probably have to pull the engine a few times before everything fits properly.

The first time I installed my headers it took me 9 hours. I can have the engine out and sitting on an engine stand in 1-1/2 hours but I tried to put the headers in with the engine still in the car. The only good thing is that I don't have any exhaust. Some mandrel bent turnouts to direct the exhaust out to the sides of the car is all I have.
