Re: the 700R4's limit

Depends how many miles and previous maintance. Doubt it. I just blew mine, and put in a Mad Dog Lou's Tranny that they said is good to 700hp. I figure I will never come close, but after I got the governor / shift points right, the thing shifts better than any auto I have ever driven! $1495 shipped. Took a couple hours.... Well worth it...

Try it, but be banking in the meantime for a replacement....

sounds like my car with a cam. If you beat on it constantly itll probably come apart. I'm not nice to my cars. Normal people wouldnt break that. But us car guys arent really normal people. Honestly it really depends on the driver. Youre not at the point where its definitly going to blow its self to smitherines, but if you want it to you definitly have the power.

Re: the 700R4's limit

I saw mad dogs on ebay for 650 to my door...can handle 400hp...which is good because im not doing any more power adding...just suspension and transmission work. Hmm...well yea judging by the car when i recieved it, i doubt it was taken care of...so Ill guess ill have to go easy on her until then...**** that sucks lol, after all that work i really wanted to "drive" the car...o well...time to start saving

Yea, you can get the cheap ones from Mad Dog. Watch the ad. On ebay there is an added core charge. The best deal no messing around is the monthly special that is a tranny with convertor for $995. I did the upgrades that got it to 1495, but the 995 one should do fine!

The single best investment you can make in your 700r4 tranny is a decent cooler. It doesn't have to be some mighty finned and fanned behomoth from B&M. One that has no fans and is rated for around 12,000 lbs is just perfect, unless you have a very powerfull engine.

No kidding ;-)

I really hope a good one can hold 800-900hp. I really hope MINE can.

Spare drivetrain parts are a must if what you're working with isn't bulletproof.

800-900hp out of 700r4.............. best wishes to you, hope you make it

I'm on my second rebuild with 540rwhp, and that is with quality parts. When this goes I'll be looking at turbo 350/400.

If overdrive, 4l80e

They say that the 87 and up 700r4 is the best but i dont think that there good. Your best bet would be a th400. But if you really want the OD just go by one of those OD kits that bolt to the tailshaft of the tranny

Re: the 700R4's limit

depends how you drive, break it... then replace it.

if you can't afford to replace it then you shouldn't be modding anyhow, always be prepared but there is no reason to waste money until it's needed.

Re: the 700R4's limit

87 and up have more splines on the input shaft. along with a few other internal parts that are better. My dad has a friend that used to work at a gm dealership for years doing trannys and has dynoed a 700r4 up to 1000 hp. After pulling it out and inspecting it the only thing wrong was that it started to twist the input shaft. When I sell my 93Z and get another 91 Im going to have him make it good to at least 600 hp. I may never have that much power but overkill never hurts.

Re: the 700R4's limit

I know one thing about 700r4s. When your stock transmission starts shifting harder than it used too, then it is about to blow. I'm not sure why, but I have had two trannies do it to me and my rebuilder says this is common.

If you want to rebuild it, I would suggest this site, www.transmissioncenter.net, for your parts and or rebuild needs. I have never used them to rebuild my trannies, but I have bought their parts. Their kits are priced well and they use goog products. They also have hardened input shafts, hardended drums, and aftermarked servos. One product that I like is their Kevlar 2-4 band, but unless you want a neck snapping transmission, I wouldn't recommend it.

when i was younger i had one say the same thing... they wanted 900 for a rebuild and it was something as simple as the transmount tearing apart. point being don't trust someone just because they get paid for it. i've had several 700's in camaros alone and not a single one has acted the same. it depends on the parts, who put it together and the rest but i still say let it break before you waste the money. in everything i did i never saw a good increase with anything internally to the trans itself beyond the converter which isn't the trans. the extra parts are fun to write down on paper but that's about as far as they go..
