700r4 tranny.. what can it handle?
If built up it can handle what you want it to handle up to a point.
But from what I have heard stock ones that came on our cars start breaking up behind anything that produces over 400ft LBS of torque.
So that 454 will most likely kill it pretty easy if not built up to handle it.

This is arguable as what the 700r4 can handle just like what the T-56 can handle. I think the simple answer is no. I got in a argument with a guy claiming his T-56 would hold up to a built 454 cause he would baby it and was building a crusier. I said if you never plan to see what you "built " 454 can do it will fine, but most F-body drivers like to test the limits every now and agian. I would go with a turbo 400 tranny for your 454.
With a 4L80, won't you need to have a standalone controller? Why not build up the 700R4 to make it do what you want? I got www.rosslertrans.com to do it based on a recommendation by Lingenfelter and have been happy with the work. Lasted 3.5 years with me beating on it every day with a LPE 383 motor.
The most that I personally know of is around 550rrhp built. Hardened input shaft, etc. does the trick. Actually, most 200r4's are built from the factory have a higher rrhp rating. The sun shell and input/output shafts are hardened and the journal surfaces are wider and hd. ...Grand Nationals run them pretty sucessfully in the 11's...
