700R4 problem, please help!

Ok to start it's a 87 LT Camaro with a 700R4. Was going down the interstate and it did as if OD was just gone, so I pulled off at an exit. The car ran fine in drive but from a stop it would run up real high rpm and shift really hard and if i slowed down to about 20mph it would downshift to 2nd hard. I stopped and checked fluid and detent cable (everything was fine) started it up and it did fine including running in OD for about 20 miles then it started it all over again so i drove it home in drive. Then this morning it seems to be doing fine. Could the computer be going bad...anyone had this happen before that could tell me whats going on or have any suggestions? PLEASE HELP! Thanks.

This sounds very similar to the problem my buddy had in his buick century. Basically he had to "reboot" his trans every so often to keep OD (what you seem to have to do). I believe the cause of this is the trans fluid filter getting clogged, thus restircting trans fluid to the internals. A trans flush and filter change wouldn't be a bad starting point.

When he "rebooted" (turing off the motor and restarting, sometimes at over 80mph!!) the material that was clogging the filter would drop back down into the pan and gave OD back.

Someone more knowledgeable care to chime in? If I am wrong (it happened once ), put this guy straight, but flushing the trans is a good piece of maint. anyway.

Sounds like a good theory, much like the sediments and debri clogging up your fuel pump filter. Too often transmission fluid and filter is overlooked.........
