5.7 IROC-Z/GTA Question

I've got about 4 grand and im looking to get myself a 3rd gen now just to drive around for a while till i get my ls1, and i wanted to ask you guys, which is faster, the (1990) GTA or the Iroc-z? normally i wouldnt ask such a retarded question since both cars have the same engine, but i saw a website that showed the track times for the GTA to be about a second slower than the Iroc-z's... is that an error or is that right, that the GTA is a little bit slower than its brother? any ways, what years would you guys suggest for me to get? im going to work on the car till i save enough money up for my ls1, so i guess the more power, the better thanks guys

The times are like that for a reason. IROC-Z's are faster and they handle better. (also look better!!)

I don't have any regrets about buying my 1990 Z28 , runs great, handles great, has nice power, and surprisingly good gas milage for a 350 v8

If I were you I'd get a '91-'92 Z28, but thats because I owned one. They look even better than the IROC's.

Well if you can find a formula.I believe they are the lightest out of 3rd gen's.If you can find a none loaded one even better.350 is the obovious choice of motor for the 3rd gen's.Second would be the 305tpi w/ 5spd.Both are close but with same money and mods the 305 falls back fast.

thanks guys im just looking for some basic info... here's the deal...

i know very little about 3rd gen engines... im mostly a ls1 guy. im buying a 3rd gen because i need a car and thats the best thing i can get right now with my budget. i was looking towards something like a 90 iroc-z or a 91-92 z28, but i'll have to get whatever i can afford. i wanna get a 5.7 though, i heard they dish out more power than the 5.0's when they're modded up a little.

another thing... what should i do to the car when i get it to start things off? im not looking to spend a hell of a lot of money on this car, but i am looking to break 12's in it. any info you guys could dish out would be really appriciated... thanks guys ill probably be buying the car this month, so ill make sure to let you guys know what i decide to get. peace

yeah i was looking at getting a 305 w/ 5speed cuz i love stick, but i'd rather get an 5.7 auto if it'll give me more power with the same mods... whats the main difference between the two engines?

A 350 twin cat is the best choice. But I'm biased cause I have one for a daily driver.

GTA's are slower cause they were the luxury version of the T/A and are loaded with options. i.e. porkers.

i was thinking about putting in a powerful nitrous cam and probably a 150 wet shot ... new chip, lt headers, exhaust, a stealthram mfpi intake manifold, large tube runners, msd ignition, cold air, and maybe some other stuff... but i really dont know exactly what i should do, i just have a basic idea from knowing what to do with an LS1. any suggestions would be kind... i think i should start another post cuz im kinda getting off subject, lol

with all that, what do you think i'd hit on the 1/4 mile?

Whats the difference?? 45 ci. The 350 TPI is the engine to get. A 90 IROC will be difficult to find since there was only 4,000-something of them that year because the IROC contract was not renewed. Whatever you get make sure it's a G92 car. (Better gears and in dual converters 89-on) Camaros are actually lighter than Firebirds because of no pop-up headlights and motors or big heavy raised spoilers.

Go to this site to learn more about Third Gens, it's the best: www.ThirdGen.Org (Read up on the Tech Data)

i love how to some people that qualifies as "a little money" the only things that you left out....shift kit, 3.73 gears.....you should be getting into the very low 13's without spraying and then the shot would put you where you need to be.

the gta is the heaviest of the 3 gen cars. all so the air intake dorps the hp in the TA's, but aftermarket air intake will take care of this. As for handling i think the gta is better but thats what i think.
