Whats the difference between a 5 speed and a 6 speed manual transmission? Why does it matter? Is it better to have the extra gear, and if so, why?

Lots of reasons. With an extra overdrive gear, you can get better gas milage, or you can put in deeper gears while still maintaining the same gas milage.

The predominant reason that we all want the 6 speeds though, is because they are substantially stronger than the T5s that the thirdgens were cursed with.
