The 4th gen rear will bolt right in, but its wider than the 3rd gen rear so your tires will stick out 1-1.5" farther on each side. If you're changing from drum to disk you'll also need a proportioning valve (that block of aluminum under the master cyl) so the brakes will work right.

You can find a rear for anything between $150 and $400 depending on what shape its in and what equipment it has...you can expect another couple hundred to purchase gears and have them installed. If all you need is gears you'd be better off getting a set of gears for the 9-bolt from Diff Solutions for about $300 and having them put in, but if you need the disc conversion too then the 4th gen rear is the way to go. You can always sell the 9-bolt for a couple hundred to help offset costs.

another thing, i wouldnt go with 4:10's, those gears are WAY too steep for a stone stock TPI. now if yo uhad a higher revving engine, they would be nice because they would get you in you peak power faster. for a TPI i would suggest a set of 3.42's. go to www.slponline.com and look for their take out rears, they are the stock 3.42 posi rears from the new z28's that were converted to an ss. if you can get a rear from a 90 or newer third gen its a direct bolt in. it will also be a 10 bolt like the 4th gen but will actuall be a direct swap. if you find one from an older 3rd gen then you will need to switch to 28 spline axels before you swap in the take out posi. BTW those posi's go for around 100 bucks depending on what you get...

I'd keep the 9bolt since it is much stronger than a 10bolt. Just pay the little extra for the gears for the 9bolt.
Strength-wise from weakest to strongest is, 10 bolt, 9 bolt, 12 bolt.
