4th gen rear in a 3rd gen

Looking to put like an 96-97 ss rear in my IROC. I know all the rear suspension parts are the same, but what about the brakes. The rear will bolt right in but will alll the brake lines and emergency brake hook back up?

The rear end like you said bolts right up to the placement of the stock third gen 10 or 9 bolt, like you said. I have personally have not done the swap myself but I am planning on tackling this after I get my 383 built and this is what my small amount of research so to say has presented me thus far...

If you have a rear disc axle right now you are good to go, but if you do not, you should keep the following in mind. You will need a new master cylinder and a new distrabution block with a new metering and perportioning valve for a rear disc equiped car. A car equiped with drum brakes in the rear utalize more than 85% of the total breaking power to the front discs, where as a car with 4 wheel disc have a much more even braking balance. Also keep in mind that a fourth gen rear will change your rear wheel offset a bit and cause the rear tires to stick out of your wheel wells a little bit.

Best of luck to you,
Erik

Aswome. I've already got a disc brake rear end, so I'm going to start searching for a rear.

I did it. I put a '95 rear into my '88 with x-drum brakes. If you have disks now, then you are good. Your backing plates and your stuff will swap right over. If you have drums now, you can still do it, but you will have to drill your drum backing plate for two additional holes, plus weld a small reinforcment bracket to support the wheel cylinder. The rear will, however, make your wheels stick out about another inch. So, even with stock wheels and stock rideheight, on big bumps and with passangers, the tires will rub. If the car is lowered, you won't be able to drive it. You can, however, get 4th generation offset rear wheels that will work just fine.

Get a rear that has brakes on it, since they are better than the stock brakes you have.
Ebrake cables will need to be replaced with 91 or 92 first Design or Second Design ebrake cables, can't remember which year and design it was.
