406 short blocks

hey guys im looking for a good short block to build a 406. looking for some one w/ a good rep! looking to make at least 450 hp / 500 of tq. so it must be a good block w/ forged pistons. also which is stronger a 350 4 bolt or a 400 2 bolt? and does anyone know how much it cost to convert 400 2 bolt to 4 bolt? all seggustions welcomed?

Thanks!!!!!!!

My splayed mains were about $250 for the billet caps themselves, and $300 for labor.

It's actually the main webbing that ends up weak on factory 4 bolt 400's due to the extra bolts going straight up into a weak area of the webbing.

See if you can find a 2 bolt 509 block (last 3 numbers of the casting #'s). These are the best blocks with the best metalurgy.

Are you looking for something other than the hundreds of reputible race shops that sell complete engines/shortblocks?

The more cubes the merrier too! A 400 2 bolt will be good with a stud kit. I'd feel good about it anyways. Goodluck!

I have a sb 406 in my 75 camaro. DO NOT go with a 4 bolt main they are much weaker than the 2 bolts. Depending on how much driveability u want out of the motor u can make all the power u will ever be able to put to the ground under 5500rpm. Mine has Pro-Topline 200cc runner heads 2.05/1.60 valves, Doug Herbert solid roller cam (custom grind), KB flat tops, rpm performer, and now using an 850 demon. With a th350,2500 stall and 3.73 gear i have went 7 flat motor and a 6.62 spraying 125 shot while breaking loose at mid track when i sprayed. Big thing to remember is balance out your tq and hp or u just gonna go up in smoke.
