Re: 3rd Gen ?

Do you mean 1988?

TPI stands for Tuned Port Injection. The higher trim levels had "real" fuel injection (8 injectors), and had substantially more power then the base model engines.

Re: 3rd Gen ?

Yeah, you (or they) probably mean 1988. The TPI designation is only used on the third gen small blocks. The V6 third gens use MPFI (Multi port) and I believe the fourth gens use SFI (Sequential). Theres not much of a difference between the designations except I think TPI is batch injector fire while the others are individual fire.

If it is indeed a 1998 and a V8, then its an LS1 engine. Very strong engines. Not a third gen car though.

Re: 3rd Gen ?

stands for tuned port injection. just another form of mpfi. pretty good in its day and known for its punchy bottom end. good in mud trucks and sports car alike. came on 305's and 350's. normaly very reliable.

Re: 3rd Gen ?

lt1's also use a tuned port injection system, they are not sequential,

the 98 would have an ls1, which is sequential, as previously stated

Re: 3rd Gen ?

The poster's question is answered but I wanted to help out respectirocz.

TPIs were mpfi and batch fire. 93 LT1s were batch fire. 94 and up LT1s and LS1s are sequential.

Re: 3rd Gen ?

yup and they were speed density in 93 too and then went back to Maf. However I woulnt exactly call the lt1 intake anything close to the tpi intake. They are a whole different creature other than the throttle boddies.

Re: 3rd Gen ?

LT1 vs L98 intake is pretty much the battle of opposites. Extremely long runner vs extremely short runner.

Re: 3rd Gen ?

good to know
my lt1 should be a maf system, but it came with no maf, i'm still trying to figure out some of the harness

i dont even know how i would run my temp guage, or tach, or oil pressure

is there an intake air temp sensor?

i should prob start a new thread

Re: 3rd Gen ?

if you have the funds, get a new painless, howell, or Speartech wiring harness.
you can run in Speed Density mode if you want, it is just a flag in the ECM to switch between MAF and SD on the 94-97 ECM's. 94-95 are cheaper to program since they are OBD1.
There is an IAT sensor and it is located on the stock LT1 intake elbow.

We ran all new autometer gauges on my friends' LT1 swaps, one in an 82 Trans Am and one in a 92 RS.

Re: 3rd Gen ?

i actually also want to do the 4th gen interior swap, so i want to try and get away with this harness for now
it would be cheaper/easier to get an entire chassis harness from a 93-97 camaro/firebird and make the modifications to get everything to work (switching from sd to maf or vice versa should not be hard, and i dont mind obd i or obd ii)

basically a 4th gen in 3rd gen clothing as we've seen before
this is a loong work in progress

Re: 3rd Gen ?

Yeah, I believe the Speed Density, as mine, went from 1990 until '93, then switched back to MAF.
It got tricky around 1995, when you had an OBDI computer with an OBDII, ALDL connector.
