Rick, I dont know exactly what the flow # on the heads are, I had the heads pocket ported by my local speed shop. (they looked very good) I never got a chance to get any rwhp #'s yet, as I type to you now sitting in Iraq.

Matt is a good friend of mine, Im actually buying his cam and hydra-rev from him, cause he wants to go with a solid roller. As of right now I think he plans on keeping his 730 ECM in there.

I want to get the AFR 210 Eliminator COMP heads. (when they come out)The heads are suppost to flow over 310 cfm @.600 lift with a smaller port than the track 1's. So Im hoping for more HP and torque than what Matt made. He even gave me the bin file for his current 445 rwhp tune, so I might be able to use some of it as a start.

I plan on using my car as a daily driver in the summertime here in minnesota, so keeping it streetable is one of my goals as well.

Randy, Can you tell me how diffucult it was to tune if any? Also do you know what the HP peaks at? Love to hear a little more aboout the combo? Does it have not bad low end as well? You are about the only one I have seen with a combo so close to what I want to build. Hope to hear all your thoughts!

Well I just got the stuff I needed to do some good datalogs 6 moths before I left, (Datamaster, LM1, Tunerpro RT) so I was kinda knee deep into the tuning, when I left for Iraq. Weeks before I left, I picked up a Moates Ostrich too and I really like it! It feels like the power is peaking around 6K or so. I havent really run it up over 6K.

Rick,
Aim for 10.5:1 compression ratio. 11 to 1 is getting high. You would hate it if you became a slave to the tune up. The extra 1/2 point probably represents less than 5 hp. Just my 2 cents

How about running an LS Series PCM from a 99-02 LS1 motor on your car now? Check out my link to my site with a pic of the motor with updated items to run it and page 2 to show the ECM. Tuning a gen1 SBC with EFILive and roadrunner is the way to go...

that's an interesting theory... i'm sure it works much better then the 730 since it's so much faster. much like running windows xp with the original pentium versus something newer today.

When we initally started the car, it was on a 01 Chevy Express L31 stock flash. It drove like a new car lol . Idel was smooth at 550 and no hesitation, no surging, no nothing lol 01 Express and Astro van were the only vehicles that came with the LS PCM and a distributor in those years.

I'm intrigued by this...do you have any links where I can get more info on this setup vs. the stock ECM/Moates adapter/autoprom/TunerCat setup I'm using.

Thanks

Go to thirdgen.org and under the TPI section in the message forum look for the link "TPI OBDII Thoughts/Options." Its a 4 page thread with everything you will need for the swap.

I now look at people buying all this prom burning stuff and chips and I say to myself, man this is way outdated.

Here is the link. I'm seriously considering doing this myself as I will also be intalling a 4L60E transmission.

This is definitely something I am seriously considering right now....
Looks like I'd just need to pickup:
411 PCM
Wiring Harness
Vortec Distributor
Crank sensor
reluctor ring (get my ATI balancer machined down)
knock sensor
vortec timing cover
Vortec Ignition module (what is this?)
Coil (I assume my MSD Blaster coil would work)
EFILive

Any idea on the total cost for this swap?

411 PCM I got for 60

Wiring Harness is 600

I used a Accel Billetech Vortec Dis its 249.99 Summit (Only HIPO Version) You can get used 4.3L ones (change cap only) 5.0 5.7 or 7.4 ones for about 35 bucks on ebay. But the stock Dis's are all plastic including shaft.

Crank sensors are found on ebay for about 25 bucks, but new ones are around 60

Reluctor ring. 12 bucks at GM dealer

Machine balancer 35 bucks

KNock sensor 50 bucks (HAS to be from an 01 Express Vin R No exceptions)

Vortec timing cover 23 bucks ebay

Coil and ignition module come together as a kit. Have to buy used to get the brackets too. I paid 25 bucks on ebay. Has to be from a 96 and up Vortec truck. Duel connector coil will not work anymore.

Timing chain set. MUST be Cloyes 9-3157 (This is the ONLY part that will work) ONLY Hi performance single roller chain. Must be single roller. 100 Bucks

98 K1500 Pickup Ignition wires. Must be from 5.7L 60 Bucks

2 NGK 21006 02 sensors. 35 apiece at summit

If using and Auto tranny 700R4 must use a TCI lockup kit to control TCC lockup. 80 bucks. 411 will not control anything in the 700R4. Speedo will still work perfect in both Firebirds with elec vss and camaros with cable.

The $600 for the harness is going to be the biggest part of deciding to go for it now or not. The conversion looks like it's about $1400, the Moates Roadrunner is $500 for the board if you solder it in yourself and EFI Live is about $200 I believe. Unfortunately I've got a brand new MSD billet distributor (spare cap and rotor) and wires, a new Comp cams true double roller chain, and 2 new heated O2 sensors on the new engine as well as the Moates Autoprom, chips, and adapters. Hmmm.....what to do. I think if the harness was half the price and I didn't have a new car payment then it would make my decision alot easier. Any idea what the difference is with the stock Express Van harness...is it mainly the gauges and wire lengths to the sensors?

You can get around the double roller chain issue with a .200" spacer and shaving the same amount off the dampner. That is what I'm going to do.
