Yeah the TFS heads definately need springs to support that cam. Any cylinder head you buy will.
Yeah it is funny that there are so many opinions. My head guy, Brian Tooley at TEA really prefers the TFS stuff to the AFRs. That is who I got this set through. Lets just say I got one hell of a steal w/ upgraded springs for much less than the base AFRs. I just stumbled across the deal at the right time I guess.
From his experience he has rarely seen a TFS 23* head flow more than 5% either way of their advertised #s. I know that is just his experience, but there are others who have seen different. He has also only seen 1 set in his experience of AFR heads flow what they claimed. He has nothing against them, but thinks that the TFS heads are the best bang for the buck in that price range.
My opinions on the heads come from other guys who have had great success w/ theirs out of the box and of course Brian @ TEA. We will see how well they perform for me after I get the motor running this spring.
Yeah what I said really does include all cylinder heads. They will all benefit from those same things. I was merely saying that from what I have personally seen on benches the AFRs need a little massaging to get them to flow what they are advertised at, while the TFS heads I have flowed dead on out of the box.

If you must use TFS heads, get it bare. No valve stems, no valve guides, etc, etc. Must be just aluminum. I had an entire side where the guides wore out and had the pushrods rub "C"s in the guideplates. Spring weakened and broke. That caused the piston to kiss the valve when it floated because it had 1 spring holding it instead of 2. Result is a new engine.
I will only use TFS heads if they were a doorstop or boat anchor. It will never enter my engine bay.

ok so really all i can do is just buy some heads and hope they work or what? Any other brands worth looking at(edelbrock,holley/weiend)?

I personally wouldn't run anything other than TFS or AFR heads. As for a cam call COMP and ask them what they would recommend. They are usually pretty good about picking out cams that run well w/ a certain setup.
