Lightbulb 383 cam, bigger or smaller?

While I'm away (Misawa AFB, Japan up to 3yrs) from my camaro (the 85' IROC Z28) I will have it worked on.
I have a 89' block in a barn.
I want it put together with forged rotating assy. and the soggin-dickey moded vortec heads.
The Edelbrook duel plain, open plentum ("preformer air gap", 1,500-6,500 rpm range) manifold.
I also want to spary the s#!t out of it.
I have the TH700R4 and the 3.08 gears (the gears will Be s-caned).
What do you think the biggest cam I could run and still have it steet able?
I was looking at flat tap cams that look about like 228'-230 @ .05 duration with .484'' + or - .004. with a big LSA of 112' and up, with 1.6 rockers (for around .510'' lift).
I was looking at bigger cams (238' @ .05 +), but I didn't plain on useing 1.6's with those.
I looked at the bigger ones, but they were just to damn big for a street car with auto trans.
Of course I'm getting a new converter and getting the trans worked on.
Then all I have to do is figure out how to get all the torque on the ground.
So is the #268 (or so) grind about right?
Should I go smaller, Or could I go bigger.

If you are going to be spraying it, and using a forged bottom end, perhaps you should consider keeping the motor as a roller motor.

The Vortech heads enable you to get away with over half an inch of lift, so why not use it to your best ability? I'd say you are in the bakkpark with the lobe separation angle and the duration, but I'd suggest you spend the extra $150 and stay with a roller cam. There will be much more area under the curve so it'll fatten up the powerband. You can probably afford to lose some lobe separation angle, too as you will be running a carb. Check out the Comp Cams series of Xtreme Energy hydraulic roller cams. The XE268HR or the next one up on the list would probably be what I'd choose.

block

The engine is a 89' truck block (with s#!ty heads), it came with flat taped lifters.
I want to do a roller lifter retro fit and a dry (very ajustable, makes roller cams easy 2 swap) external timing belt.
I would like it if every thing in the valev train started with roller, but it takes a lot of cash to do.

Depends how much money you want to spend and how much power you want to make.

What does streetable mean to you?

There are people around here who run 250/260 duration roller cams with .600"+ lift and regularly drive to and from the track and all over just cruising...That's MY personal limit of "streetable".

My flat tappet cam is a Comp Cams Nitrous HP cam. 230/244 curation, .519/.534" lift with 1.6 roller rockers. 2500-6500RPM range. I would suggest buying the 268 version of this cam lineup with those heads. I think the next one smaller than mine is the 268 anyways, the specs will be roughly 220/230 probably with .500" lift with 1.6 rocker arms. I think it would be a good starting point for a small spray engine. Lobe seperation on all of these Nitrous HP Flat tappet cams is 113 degrees also. Cost was a factor for me also, the entire K-Kit cost me something like $350 total...Vs a roller cam kit which would have been closer to $800-1000...hehe Goodluck!
