350cid distributer help

Hi guys. So finally (2 years later) me and my brother are looking to finish up a project. We installed the new oil pump, and the distributer. Now for the issue.

We can not get the distributer to go all the way down. We have turne over the engine to insure thecam gear is lined up ect, and it will not go down. It has a good 1/4" to go.

What am i missing out on? I know pics are helpfill so hope these work.

theo botoom of it has to enguage the oil pump driveshaft down below. It has a notch and the oil pump driveshaft has a slot. Usually you have to use a LONG flat blade screw driver to turn the oil pump driveshaft SLIGHTLY to get it back in alignment.

Do a search for pics. There have been write ups on this since 1955 probably...hahaha Goodluck!

The other method is to install the dist. and then "tap" the starter(turn the key to start momentarily), until the dist. drops. Then go back and recheck the timing/rotor position.
