ZF6 is the name of the transmission, not the goddamned RPO code. fbird95 posted the full-length german name above that I'm not wasting my time to cut & paste.
What are they testing for? Extra weight? Why would they test a 350 ci, in an 86 car? The engine they suposibly tested in the 50 86' IROCs that as you claim were all automatics had 220 hp. In 85' the LB9 enigine put out 215 hp. Then in 86 its breathing was clogged back up and the LB9 had only 190 hp. Your telling me GM would spend all that money to build and test 50 cars that had 5 more hp.
I dont think so.
I dont think so.
Since the L98 in the f-body was sufficiently different than what went into the Vette, I'm sure there were plenty of issues that needed to be tested. Pistons, heads, cam... those were all different. Now you put that in a different car, and the PROM tuning would need work. Emissions testing and tuning would be another reason. There's a million reasons why GM would need to test that car before they put into production. They don't just put a plan on paper one year and produce the car for sale the next. Nothing goes out the doors without significant testing.

Re: 350 w/manual transmision
I have a 91 with a swapped 350 crate motor and a t5 in it. they are hard to find but not that hard to swap. Mines for sale if your still looking for one, its very clean with no rust at all. The T5's bolt right on to the 350 without any adapter, to settle that disagreement
Re: 350 w/manual transmision
That being said, the VAST MAJORITY of V8 3rd gens with manual transmissions are aftermarket swaps.
