350 fit into a 305.....
350 fit into a 305.....
hey guys.. will the 350 bolt straight up from the 305 v8? i know its not that much bigger but will the mounts all bolt straight to it? and also will the flywhere bolt straight up to the stock 350? i really dont know to much any info would be great.. thanks
Re: 350 fit into a 305.....
The engines are identical, except the bores of the 350 are bigger. External dimensions for a chevy small block are 100% the same if it is a 265, 283, 302, 305, 327, 350, 383, 400, 406, 427, etc etc etc.
Re: 350 fit into a 305.....
yea all chev 8s are same, even most big blocks bolt right up unless otherwise noted
but i'd certainly research it, anyone who can turn a wrench can do it, just you'll end up breaking stuff if you dont know where it is located and ensure it's out of the way, if you do do it, take pictures and all that, and make sure you dont have spare parts afterwards, just make sure you change out your mounts engine and transmission as they're 20 yrs old if you're removing a 305, remove distributor before pulling the motor and before putting the 350 back in, and everything else should be pretty smooth
flywheel.... i wouldnt bolt it up to a 350 unless it's a very late 305 (like a 91 or 92 HO) and the 350 is bone stock (about 250 hp) if one of those is not true.... and by your sig it's an 86 305thus move on buy a new one.... however you dont have to it will bolt up, however i like my legs where they are, and i dont trust cheap japanese steel crap to hold what it's meant to, much less more, i'd put a good flywheel on before putting the 350 in

Re: 350 fit into a 305.....
Well most of these forums have a SEARCH button on top. It would've been just as easy to read other topics than to start a new topic to anwser this question then posting it for the 100th time or 1000th time. But yeah a 350 will bolt up to a regular 305 car with no problem at all...all that is left is for if you had fuel injected tpi would be to upgrade injectors and get a custom made chip. If it was carb then there wouldnt be much of a problem. Just get it tuned right. And hope you get a nice 350 in there cause thats one of the best upgrades you can do...or unless you add bolt ons to that 305 make sure they swap to a 350 later

The fact that you think this is true and that all chev v8s will bolt up in all thirdgens without problems confuses me.
Most of the issues aren't major but a few of them are. There are differences between years mainly. So find out what year car the 350 was yanked from and I assume this is going in the 86 in your sig? Flywheels/flexplates don't all match. 168 vs 153 tooth. Then you have starter issues if the flywheel/flexplate is different.
Meh, whatever. Some of you guys are the idiots that come into a parts store and get pissed when the guy behind the counter asks what year 350 the starter is for.
"Well they're all the same!"
Yeah....no they're not. Offset bolt pattern? Standard straight? Do you want a smaller starter for header clearence?
Same thing with ****ing gaskets.
"All of the oilpans are the same! What are you talking about?!"
Sorry, just needed to vent.
Re: 350 fit into a 305.....
if i'm not mistaken there is also some issues with 1 piece and 2 piece rear main seals...
but it's been a while since i've messed with anything other than LT1/LS1

Re: 350 fit into a 305.....
you'r 305 uses a one piece rear main seal, which means the flywheel/flexplate bolt pattern is different
if your 350 isolder than 86 your flywheel/flexplate wont match up from the original 305
if you have a flywheel/flexplate with the 350
then you have to check if its 153 tooth or 168 tooth
the easiest way to check is to look at the starter
some starters have a straight bolt pattern some have an offset
thats because of the flywheel
straight bolted starters use a 153 tooth flywheel/flexplate
offset bolted starters use a 168 tooth flywheel flexplate
i believe your 305 uses a 153 tooth starter
so if the 350 you have came with a flexplate and uses a straight bolted starter then you are good to go
