305HO or NOT???

Is the 305HO the LG4 or L69? When I did and VIN decoder it showed the my engine is a LG4 but the decals and such on the car says it's a 5.0 HO, so I am a bit confussed. Maybe it's just late and I need to go to bed. LOL

1984 Z28- 8th letter in my VIN is "H".

Did they do something in 1984 that I don't know about?

Thanks
UGLY.....

Hey, i also have a 84 Z28 H.O. the H.O. is the L69 which was 190 hp and the LG4 was the other engine offered for the Z28 rated at 150 hp.

Re: 305HO or NOT???

Dave,
Yeah I know. What I am trying to figure out is why my vin# tells me it's a LG4 with the number eight letter being a "H". If it is a HO it should be a "G" which idicates it's a L69.

All of the decals and such say it's a HO and the VIN says it's a LG4.

Thanks
Ugly

you can buy HO decals and slap them on the car.
Is the car fast?

If it's an L69, you will have a dual snorkel air cleaner, your carb will have "DR" secondary metering rods in it, the Y-pipe will be 2 1/4 inch mandrel bent pipe, the catylitic converter will be a Corvette "wide mouth" design with oval entry & exit pipes, four-bolt flange style. It will have a knock sensor screwed into the block on the passenger side water jacket. Your tach will probably show a 5500 RPM red line and will rear to 8000 RPM. Your car will more than likely sport rear disc brakes and a 32mm swaybar.

Re: 305HO or NOT???

Well, The mystery is solved....

It's not the HO. I looked up the casting number on the block and it ended in "SDN" whick tells me it's a LG4. Someone played a sick joke on me and put the decals on it and made me think its the L69.

Thats ok, I'll still keep it, might even leave the decal on the dash just cause it looks cool.

I appreciate everyone's input.

Wonder what else I will find????

Later

Another uninformed buyer not checking the Vin for engine type but relying on the sellers info and car badges. Score: Buyer (O) Seller: (1).

Re: 305HO or NOT???

Just FYI:

The VIN will show a 7 to designate an L69.

Waitaminute. Since when does the 305 H.O. have its own unique engine casting number? Both the LG4 and L69 use identical engine blocks. The difference for 1984 shortblocks is in the pistons and camshafts.

What could you tell with regards to the clues I gave you?

Re: 305HO or NOT???

Just check the Vin number as previously stated, eighth number is (G) for 305 HO.

As stated in his very first post, he did just that, which is why he was curious and posted in the first place. In the unlikely event someone swapped out the powertrain, I think some independent verification would be in order, by looking for the most obvious of the L69 speed parts.

Re: 305HO or NOT???

The LG4s had aluminum intakes, too, though, AFAIK. My '81 2nd gen LG4 did.

I ordered my '83 L69 car from the factory and haven't touched it. Here's what mine has:

The VIN engine code is a 7. I wonder if the digit could have been different for other years?

The tach is a 5000/7000 RPM unit. Again, did they change in later years?

It has rear discs that were an option that could be ordered for any Z/28.
